SK 42470 Ratchet

Is it normal for the switch on the SK 42470 1/2 ratchet to have a little play? I just received a brand new one and was surprised to hear the lever shake when I picked it up. Though I have seen these types of ratchets many times I have never owned one. I suspect if the rattle is normal that it goes away or lessens once dirt and grease gets in there.

I have an SK very similar to that one. Never heard it rattle......

yes the direction levers have play in them in this style of ratchet, no problem and it is possible it could rattle. I have rebuilt some of these for the heads being rusted up by their owners lack of care after dunking them and when you look inside you can see that there will be play from lever cap to direction lever but once lubed up with grease provided with kit no rattle but play still there 100% normal. If you want put some light grease in head like when rebuilding and it will be quiet but not a big deal

Ive got 2. One from the late 30's has no play and the other from the 40s or 50's does have a bit even though it was just rebuilt.
I wouldnt worry about it.

I've got an old one and not rattles or play in it. See if you can get a rebuild kit from S*K...

I have one that I just rebuilt. It hasn't been used a single time since the rebuild. It has no rattle or play. It is surprisingly nice. I don't know how it would be after some use, but it is very good now. It is lubricated well, too. It's not too stiff or tight, and has no play. If you wonder why it needed rebuilt, the retaining ring broke or fell out or whatever, and I lost the guts! I know of a few people this has happened to.

I have handled quite a few of these ratchets used, and most of them had some play in the direction lever. I've never heard one rattle, but I'm guessing it's just because it is so new. I can't say because I've never handled a brand new one. You're probably right, once dirt and grease get in there it should be fine.

I've eight of these ratchets and they all have "play" in them. That's a good thing because with a little practice you'll learn to switch ratchet direction with your thumb while your ratchet and arm are buried deep inside your engine compartment --

Fairly essential to be able to do that when putting the lower timing cover on while doing timing belt replacement on some transverse VW engines. If that bolt goes in pissed, you're gonna have to take it back out. And between timing cover and chassis rail there's very little room.

Probably less essential for you guys than for me.

Cool, I was a bit concerned when I received it (the ratchet was shipped loose in a large box) but feel confident that the ratchet is fine. It does work perfectly.

I don't have an S-K ratchet but I sure has hell wouldn't want the direction lever rattling.

Beats the broken one I sent in for repair. Seems they lost that one so they sent a new one in return. 'Twas a strange transaction.

I have a handful of SK ratchets. Oldest one is a flat handle. Some are looser than others. All work great. Handle diameter of the round ones is not the same over time but the difference is inconsequential. They're great ratchets. Lube them once in awhile and they'll last a very long time before needing rebuild.

I'm looking for one that's at least 0.875 (7/8") diameter, this is closer than most (or most don't give specs on handles).
