Would be handy when using an impact on the other end. I always use a breaker bar for that instead of a ratchet so I don't beat the hell out of it.

Hinge handle is like obstruction tool when you don't have a flex head, and its a ratchet life prolonging tool when you have a weak, antiqe round-head (that is not rebuildable if you shear some teeth). Modern flex heads are stronger and rebuildable, so the need for breakers is diminished--especially in the compact sizes.

This is why I still love the saltus wrench. They are getting harder to find though.

Actually that's a leftover from the days when the preideal owned SK sold tools to the government. You can find the same size 1/2 drive breaker bar branded KD, PROTO, and others. Government 1/2 drive socket sets included the shorter breaker bar so, the 1/2 drive sockets could be used where a longer breaker bar wouldn't fit. They're also pretty handy in low torque applications like adjusting wheel bearing lock nuts.

I just used mine today... Adjusted the skid shoes on my snowblower.

I use mine also doing oil changes...

What's the difference if you use a saltus wrench or just a regular wrench holding back on an impact gun? I prefer to use a regular box end of a wrench vs something with a joint.

most probably agree with you, but the saltus has

1) variable angle of attack unlike a 0 or 15 degree combo.
2) socket end fits deep recesses unlike combo/ratchet
3) unlike a flex+socket, you dont need to assemble/disasseble
4) the wrench handle is usually lighter and more nible than breaker

They are generally out of mainstream use, but stil handy if you have recessed small fasteners with low torque values. Today you may be better off with other approaches--but not off of them will be cheaper or more simple.

T45 summed it up. The variable angle makes it where I don't event have to hold the wrench sometimes and the big plus over a breaker bar is the negative/acute angle variability.

I understand the angle thing, I just feel a saltus wrench is the incorrect tool to be used with an impect wrench. I could see that joint breaking very easily. Hey, If it works it works. What's the biggest saltus wrench available? Do they go over 1"?

You make a good point. I use them to hold with just a regular ratchet or my air ratchet much more than with an impact, though I've done that too. Its not the joint the breaks, the only one that broke on me was because the socket itself cracked.

The biggest one I have is 7/8.

Here are few saltus from my collection, they get used here and there.

I love those wrenches, my dad has several from my late grandfather who was a tool and die maker for Proto. Now that I know the name, I will search and see if i can get some of my own.
