SK LP90 Finally Failed (sorta)

So I know SK is good and gone, and with it the LP90 (and related ratchets), but I figured I post a follow up if anyone is interested. I bought an LP-90 when they first dropped back in 2017(16?), a sweet green selector unit. My particular unit was great, and I've used it quite a bit. However I noticed the past 6 months or so it was getting progressively less smooth, and the selector was getting harder to switch and would get stuck frequently.

Finally today the selector was just completely stuck, and I couldn't get it to move at all. I finally caved and took the ratchet apart, and was horrified to find it filled with rust. I never dropped the ratchet in water, but have used it outside in the rain (but I've ever let it sit outside in the rain). I suspect the rust mainly came from condensation since it lives in my toolbox in an unheated area. But besides the rust, I found it alarming there was not a spec of oil or grease anywhere. I can't imagine the ratchet was assembled completely dry, but I doubt it would have rusted the way it did if it was adequately lubed.

Anyways spent a few minutes cleaning up the rust (just light surface rust really). The selector pin and detent ball seemed to be the worst with pitting, everything else the rust wiped off. I then put it back together and liberally lubed it up with Zoom-Spout oil. The ratchet action is now silky smooth again, and the selector is significantly improved (not perfect, but it seems to be wearing in).

It's one of my favorite ratchets - just too bad SK couldn't get the quality control sorted. Probably one of the reasons that led to their demise. So anyone with an LP90, I recommend you pop it open and oil it if you haven't done so already.

I bought two SK flex heads last year at a good sale. They were both very, very rough at the price point. I soaked the 3/8 overnight in ATF and then spun it for a couple minutes both directions with a drill. It did smooth up quite a bit but if I had paid full price for them I would have been pretty pissed.

I like my LP90's. But I won't deny that they failed to live up to my hopes. My 1/4" never really has worked without binding, the 3/8" never fully loosened up but the 1/2" is a gem. All usable and I do like them but they've kinda fallen to ther back of the drawer as I've added more and better ratchets.

Color me disappointed.

SK still makes them or has someone making them. I would contact them and get replacement guts. Or just buy some on eBay. I would Def not send it in if it's the nice green switch.

The two that I bought when they were first released were completely dry inside, which is probably why so many people complained about them early on. A bit of SuperLube oil made a massive difference in how well they worked.

The lube issue was not limited to the LP90. I bought a brand new standard 3/8" round head right at the end, before Great Star took over. Call me sentimental. The round head had the same iffy grease that the LP90's had. Nuked it from orbit with Brake cleaner, and added some Super Lube.

Something more systemic was going on with SK towards the end. Probably worth popping open my LP90's for a re-lube.

I just snagged a pair of the LP90 ratchets for Epstein's. Popped them both open, cleaned and lubed. Hoping they last a lifetime.

That is sad. I have an LP90 1/4 inch drive I purchased in 2020. First thing I did was take it apart and smear a very light coat of moly grease in there, but if I recall correctly it did come with some lube.
It's probably time for me to take it apart and lube it again. I might go for some SuperLube oil this time since I finally have some and thats what all the cool kids are using.

I just went out and lubed my two LP90's. The 1/4" flex head had a fair bit already. The 3/8" was pretty dry, and the lever was fairly balky, which wasn't the case the last time I used it. I didn't see any rust, so just gave it a tiny bit of SuperLube and buttoned it back up. Seems fine now. I'll remind myself to grab it more often.

I should probably have less 3/8" ratchets...

I think you missed a dose of the blue pill called "Buy More".
