For anyone curious....here's a set of SK mid depth metric 1/4 drive sockets compared to Craftsman metric 1/4 drive shallow and deep.

As received...

Comparing 5mm

And full sets.

I have a couple of those, not real fond of them. Seems like it is either too long or too short, never just right. YMMV

One thing I have always wondered.... Who in their right mind invented the 5.5mm socket? More importantly WHY; was 5 or 6mm just not good enough? :lol_hitti

I use my buddies Snapon ones quite a bit at his house, so I think I'll use these too.

And I've used the 5.5 more than I have the 5 or 6. Cant remember on what, but I thought the same thing until I needed it.

Ford loves to use those on splash shields and wheel wells.

O yea, it seems like I use my 5.5mm quite a bit. I just always wondered WHY they had to place a size between 5 and 6mm. I also have some other X.5mm socket that I can't remember off the top of my head. Thinking like 6.5 or maybe 7.5mm?

some rubber intakes going around the throttle bodies on honda's are held with 5.5mm clamp
also a phillips head, but you know how well that works out

Just the other day I had a 'too short but long is too long' scenario but I'll still never buy "semi-deep" sockets

Well, going from 5mm to 6mm is a 20% increase. 5 to 5.5mm is just 10%, which is in the range - percentage wise - of 10, 11, 12, 13.

That said, for small fasteners, WTF does it matter?

Length aside, how do you like the sockets? How is the finish on them?

I love the SK mid lengths! 6 or so years ago they offered a set with sae and metric socket along with a ratchet and nut driver handle in a case. It is my go to set on the road.

I have been wanting to run across a 9/16. Its there only one I need, I get by without it but would be the perfect tool a few times a year.

I just use a 7/32" socket. Close enough for such a low torque application.

There have been many times where a mid length socket would come in handy. I still need to get them though, but I plan on getting 3/8" mid length impacts instead.

Reserecting a thread from the dead.... About a year or so ago, somebody had a special on SK middies, buy the MM set and they'll throw in the SAEs for free. Does anybody remember who this might have been? Anybody seen something similar anywhere?
