SK socket set, order cancelled!

I placed an order for a 48 piece 1/4 inch new SK socket set off of ebay. The next day, I get an email from PayPal saying they refunded my money. The note from the Wisconsin retailer says "Im sorry but these are out of stock everywhere. SK went on strike and they are having a hard time catching up."

Why would you list an item for sale on ebay if it's not available?! I assumed this would be in his actual inventory. I guess not. How many on line tool sellers are just placing drop shipped orders? I guess I have a this strange notion that if you advertise something for sale you've checked to see if you can get it, or even better, you actually have it in your own inventory.

So now if I want to order any SK items, I need to ask the seller if it's actually available? :wtf:

The majority of online tool sellers are just drop-shippers. I know for a fact that tooltopia is a drop shipper because I buy from one of the wholesalers that fills some of their orders.

One would think that would be common sense and expected. But, you have seen that common sense is not very common these days!

I am in the middle of a dispute regarding shipping charges, this vendor new what the item was in terms of gross weight, and where it was going.

Now he wants the huge aszz difference in cost because he was too fucken stupid to actually get it weighed and price determined!

I won't hold the bag because he didn't find out the actual price that isn't my fault!

Most sellers, and eBay itself, states that "your bid is a contract". You have agreed to buy the item.

But sellers can just not complete the sale if the selling price isn't to their liking. Even in this case, the seller could get stock. Just not drop-shipment through their usual distributor at a wholesale price. You can be certain that if it sold at 5x or 10x retail, the seller would have found a set.

But as long as eBay gets their listing fee, they don't seem to care.

I had this happen to me with a Williams 1/2 flex head from an eBay seller. So I bought a sk tuff1 instead.

You are not supposed to drop ship on ebay. Everything you list is supposed to be on hand and ready to ship when the auction ends. I would deffinately leave feedback.

Ebay has turned into a huge mess in the last couple of years. I have been buying and selling on ebay for the last 12 years and it's really taken a downward spiral in the last couple years. But that is a whole nother story.

Yeah, eBay grew, but it has gotten worse with size instead of better with experience.
We should kick the CEO out. Perhaps put her someplace where she can't do any harm.

Not defending the out-of-stock seller, but things sound pretty grim for SK. When whatever's on people's shelves is gone, SK is probably gone.

I've been shopping for a couple larger metric pieces to fill out my stuff. I started with my local NAPA jobber. They handled SK for years. They say they've got a couple boxes full of broken tools that they can't get warranty replacements for.

One tool website I looked at has a big warning in red that says warranty has to be handled directly with SK.

Not to hijack this thread but I will be really disappointed if SK folds. I really like the tools I have from them and had planned to buy more in the future. I'm not sure of the reason for the strike or if it is to blame, if so the workers really "cut their own throats."

Thanks

And you can throw the warranty out the window. Think I'd better grab some rebuild kits while I still can.

I have quite a few older, used SK tools. If anyone needs anything specific, I may be able to dig through the SK stuff. Don't get me wrong, I am NOT trying to seek buyers here. I'm not really ready to start trying to sell many tools. But when I am ready, I'll list them in the classifieds. I'm just letting SK folks know I have some older, USED SK stuff.

I'd be suprised if it was from a strike. They were on strike all last fall, if I recall. My guess is they've stopped making new products but don't want anyone to know until they clear their inventory. Knowing your warranties are no good is bad for business.

This is what I'm guessing as well.

Curiously, that listing is gone. I did leave the seller a grumbling message about expecting him to have items in stock. I guess he listened. :)

This whole saga shows bigger isn't always better. Facom bought them, everything was going to be great. Not. Facom leaves, SK will go it alone. So how many years did it take before zombie-dom arrived? Too bad though. I've got a set of SK stubby box end wrenches and the chrome is gorgeous, very durable.

I see a few other 1/4 inch sets of ebay, so I think I'll email the seller first and see if they actually have it in stock.......

tooltopia has SK in stock and cheap. Bought a 1/4 drive SAE set and semi-deep metric set.

I've heard that SK is on the verge of declaring bankruptcy. If this happens there will be a number of tool companies that will be interested in buying them, so I doubt SK will go away completely.

yeah...i think somewhere out west would be best....FAR west...lol...

to the OP, that's how it goes on ebay sometimes...just make sure you leave the appropriate (negative) feedback, and file a case against them for not delivering. The seller's supply problems are not YOUR problems...don't let them pass the buck...(does not one take responsibility for their actions any more?!)

Stanley bought Facom and SK started the separation process, before the purchase was complete. I still wonder, if Facom/Stanley (now), still has license to the designs (aka diminishing SK's value).

Geez, is there anyone they don't own. I can't remember where but I read that SK outsources screwdrivers from Facom.

I doubt Danaher would want SK. (nor would Stanley) Hand tool sales are declining and what's left of SK wouldn't bring much to the party.

Someone might come in and buy the SK name and slap it on some no name Chinese made tool. (Like what happened to Thorsen). The SK plant would be of no value and would just be liquidated.

It's really sad.

Thats a violation of ebay rules you must have the items in stock

EBAY has rules? Unless it hurts them financially they don't give a s**t about you. Once they bought paypal it was over, then they changed the feedback so a seller can't leave a buyer negative feedback!? WTF how are the sellers suppose to know if the buyer is a crackpot? Sorry for my rant, but i feel better now.

I just bought a new set from a guy just emailed first. He said that his contract ended and he's selling the inventory, all stuff is in hand ready to ship. I asked about the demise of SK and received no email back.

They did. She left and is now running for political office in California. So much for putting her where she can't do any harm. Jeeze. :wtf:

Yes, I pretty much flaked out on ebay as well, I used to keep 150-300 tool and part listings going, I'm down to NONE !. I just unconsciously gave up little by little.

And to find anything anymore to buy,,.... do a search for something as simple as a "ford truck mirror" you get 5 thousand returns, which melts down to a couple hundred different mirrors, and the balance are all the same couple sellers, selling the same mirror which they listed a couple hundred times each ( who knows why they do that ? ), making it most difficult to sort through. And then the yo-yo's that sell stuff they dont have, I just dont get that, thats just stupid greed..my god man, at least have it before you sell it!! I dont know why that never even crossed my mind, "Hey I'm going to sell stuff I dont have or ever see" want to talk about the quickest way to run your feedback in to the ground, short of just taking the money and running.... I dunno ! Morons!

Ordered another one!

Well, I ordered another of the same 48 piece set, this time from a different seller. I received a UPS tracking number stating it's been shipped. Yay!

I'm looking forward to seeing what the tools are like and how they work. If anything like the finishing of my stubby box ends, they should be very nice.

So let's see now, if this all comes through as it should, I'll have some SK, Proto, Snap-on, Armstrong, Cornwell, Wright, Mac, Craftsman, Lisle, and Indestro for hard line tools. Of course I'm not counting old cheap Asian stuff. What other brands do I need to get? :bounce:

Yup, I had a Tooltopia order go bad. Right name, address, and tooltopia return address on the box, but inside was the packing slip from another company and the contents of someone else's order from that company. I called Tooltopia and left a message (after hours) and the other company and the next day they were quick to resolve things. Talk about a strange situation though.
