SK sockets are great. I have SK 1/4 3/8 1/2 3/4 and 1" drive in chrome and impacted. Well built strong sockets. SK ratchets are great too. I bought my first SK sockets and wrenches 31 years ago in 1982, and still use em. I also got some newer Idea SK sockets with flank drive and they are better than ever. Try the ratchets and extensions too.

30 years ago my Dad worked at a parts store and bought me a set of S&K sockets and wrenches for High School graduation. I'm pretty much a DIY and still use that same set to maintain my vehicles. I've only had a problem with one ratchet in all that time. It came to me new in a 1/4" drive set and the local dealer rebuilt it on site for free while I waited. I've had good luck with them.

Also note... My father is now in a nursing home and I've started going through his shop. So I'm adding his older S&K stuff to my sets. Lots of memories using those tools in the 70's to rebuild cars.

I have some older sk sockets that have stood the test of time well.

I recently bought some sk impact sockets and those look to be great.

I also recently bought some sk chrome sockets and while I'm sure they will function well, there are interior rust issues and spots where the chrome coverage is missing. Personally this is not a big deal for me as I intend to use the sockets and they will get scratched up and get gunk on them.

Reading on this forum it appears that there was some issues with QC before sk went into bankruptcy. Not sure if what I got was pre or post bankruptcy production, YMMV

Nothing fancy but will get the job down for years to come. There is a reason you find so many sk sockets second hand because they are darn strong and affordable. My Dad and grandfather swear by sk.

sk has some great sockets and imo do the best chroming of all the major brands. i have sockets from craftsman proto armstrong facom sk matco and imo sk is the best bang for the buck as to fit and finish.on second thought you cant go wrong with sk,proto and armstrong as to strength to finish again sk on top.

My advice is to shop around and don't pay anything close to retail. The SK starter sets in 1/4 and 3/8 drive available in the famous (probably not as famous as the green hammertone metal boxes from my youth) blowmolded cases can be a great value and provide you with years of hard service.

I bought a set of 3/8 drive S&K in the blow mold case a while back so I had a fairly complete set for my truck tool box. I've used them quite a bit and they have held up well. I bought mine off of evilBay for around $100.00 it was SAE and Metric shallow and deep. There's a set on there right now (http://www.ebay.com/itm/SK-94547-47..._Automotive_Tools&hash=item5af3baf23b&vxp=mtr). Try them you'll like them.

I picked up an SK 1/2 metric and SAE set a while back. I've liked them so much and wanted to support the new SK that I just bought a 3/8 set the other week to replace my (now old) Craftsman set.

I'm sure more SK tools will follow.

I've had the 3/8" 47 piece set for 15 years and the similar 1/4" 48 piece set for 12 years and have never had one failure (except a 4' cheater bar on a 3/8" ratchet which was warranty covered.)

If anything, I'll wear the chrome on my 15mm short 3/8" drive socket out before all others.

I bought a 1/2 inch set of SK's in the late 80's and those era of sockets are ****. I've broken many and I'm not a pro.
I think the older ones and the newer ones are much better based on what the other members report. It is a very respected brand overall. As yard sale scores of snap on and other higher end brands happen, I am gradually phasing them out.

What's better sk or Williams ratchets

S-K is the originator of the round head ratchet and have been making basically the same ratchet for 80 plus years with very little changes so you can still rebuild them http://www.skhandtool.com/sockets-ratchets/45170.aspx

Many of the older Williams parts are not available.

They are of comparable quality and price though there seems to be more people who collect older S-K so their price is a bit higher. Both are solid USA made tools.
