I have the 47 piece 3/8” drive socket set and love it. Looking for the 1/2 and 1/4 drive to match up with it.

What is the best 1/2 and best 1/4 setthat SK makes to pair with this set?

Second question I need spark plug sockets. Do you all prefer the flex spark plug sockets or straight?

Can't answer the question on sets (I inherited a 1/2" set) but I will tell you that today, in 2018, if you are working on most anything, you will want both flex spark plug sockets and straight. Both sizes. Just get'em.

The 1/4" set with up to 15mm is nice and has 44? Pcs. The one with addition pieces like thumbwheel and wobble, you may or may not want.

My 1/4 set does a lot for me but I like a few add-ons.
Roto ratchet for ultimate acces to small stuff against firewalls.
"in between" and "extra" length extensions. Maybe find a 1/4 driver with handle and female end at the top.
I do keep a wobble in the box. Also in the box:
1/4sq. drive bit holder.
8/10 Sunex 12pt flip socket - time saver! Might add others.

I never need 12pt in 1/4 drive, but if I bought the 1/2 dr set, I would go 12.

My 3/8" set has been with me 22 years.

SK 91848 for 1/4" 6pt

SK 4147 for 1/2" 12pt

This 1/4 set is the one to buy, pretty complete except for some shorter/longer extensions & wobble extensions.

For a 1/2 drive set, 12pt in chrome would be the way to go unless you dont have impacts sockets (get the impacts first). I see the S-K 1/2 set only goes to 19mm in deep, so you'd be buying a few more sockets if want up to 24mm or larger. IMO, 10-24, plus 27, 30, 32, 36 would cover most things.

For plug sockets I use the extended length the most (pretty much 75% of the time), followed by the normal size then the flex style. The long extension swivel style have their uses but I've not used mine as of yet.

The Matco spark plug sockets have knurling at the drive end which is nice.

Gearwrench with the integrated flex extension and magnet is where it’s at. Snapon is good too depending on budget.

I have the 91848 and it's a very good set. Out of the three large sets, it's probably the best for the buck. I also have the 3/8 version of that set use them both regularly.

I recently added the DT upgrade to the 1/4 and also recommend it.

Is there really any need for the 60 piece 1/4” set over the 48 piece?? Also everyone recommending the 12 pt 1/2” set I would think you want 6 pt for strength??

Need? Only you can decide that. 60 piece includes a few more (not very useful ones IMO) sockets and a couple of adapters/universal joint. Unless you need those, the value IMO, is in the 48 piece set.

1/2" 6pt vs. 12pt, lots of opinions but generally the thinking is that in 1/2" drive size 12pt 'corner rounding' is less of a concern. Strength wise, there will be no noticeable difference in actual use. If you're reefing that hard on a chrome socket, time to step up to impact tools...

44 piece 1/4" and 47 piece 1/2". Both 6 point. Bought mine plus the 47 piece 3/8 set at a local welding supply store.

There's lots of capability in those sets. Deep and shallow, metric and standard, a ratchet and a couple of extensions.....that covers a lot of ground, all neatly packed in a convenient storage case. I have the 1/4" and 3/8" sets and I'd love to have the 1/2" set to round it out. I'll probably get it from Harry Epstein's.

Unless you see yourself never owning an impact of some sort, I'd recommend skipping 1/2" chrome and get impacts. Usually when you need 1/2" drive, you need an impact as well. I have both, and the 1/2" chrome pretty much never get used. Keep in mind you can use impact sockets with hand tools, but the reverse is not recommended.

This is something looking back now, I would have done differently. I have all three (1/4, 3/8, 1/2") SK sets in the blow mold cases. Nice sets and portable which is why I got them. Looking back, I would have saved the money and went all impact. Oh well.

^^^Agreed, this is what I did. My 1/2" chromes are gathering dust...

Not me, I carry both on my truck in 1/2" drive. Because a lot of applications I simply can't get a thick walled impact socket into. Average DIY guy would be fine with simply impacts in that size.

I have 1/4"-3/4" sets on my truck all SK. Not only because of the great tool quality, but also because of the excellent storage solution the cases that they come in are for service truck use.

I have a hard time giving up my chrome 1/2" and 3/4" drive sets, too many years of using them day to day even if now they just sit.

Guess its the nostalgia aspect.

I would buy 1/2" drive chrome in 12 point, for the tight access or 12 point head situation. Regular 6 point impacy for the bulk of larger fasteners. On stuff other than newer automotive there are still many situations where the chrome stuff and a ratchet or bb are still needed.
