So I was cruising around my local Orchard Supply stores and found this little 3/8" thumbwheel on clearance. I already have their 1/4" thumbwheel so had to get this one too.

After bringing it home, I found this ratchet will turn smoothly in one direction but it binds in the other. It feels as if the selector is getting stuck. I took it apart and found the internal selector bent upwards. It's bent far enough where its making contact with the wheel.

Does anyone know if this is how it should look? I don't have another to compare except I know the selector on the 1/4" thumbwheel is perfectly flat.

Why don't you take your 1/4 apart and compare?

I have been fighting the idea of buying the 1/4 since I saw it last week on clearance at OSH.

It did take apart the 1/4 wheel. The selector on that one isn't bent up like this. But the parts on the 1/4" wheel are smaller and different.

I'm pretty sure this is a mfg defect or customer created return but I want to be sure before contacting SK.

set the cap on top of the guts and see if it lays flat. if it does not i bet it binds in the housing. i would clamp it in a vice and tap that lever down with a punch anyway.

The cap doesn't sit flat on the guts because of that bent selector lever. I put the guts on a vice and hit that piece with a punch. Unfortunately, it pops right back up. Tonigth I'm going to take this apart and see if I can bend that arm down a bit.

Thanks.

i bet that is your problem. those can be competely disassembled. just don't lose the spring and pin that holds the pawl to either side. a trick that many use is to take ratchets apart in a clear plastic or large ziploc bag. if you have ever searched the floor for a tiny part that zinged away you will understand.

+1 on skfarmer's diagnosis. That lever should not be bent. If you straighten it out so it lies flat, your problem should be solved.
