SK warranty?

So I went down to the parts store to warranty a couple SK tools, and was told they aren't warrantying them, because SK got sold.

Seems like whoever bought SK would have also assumed their warranty as part of the assets and liabilities.

Anybody else run into this?

Actually getting them to warranty the wrench and socket will be the first step. After that, I have to fight with them over a receipt. They've told me that to warranty Vise Grips, I'd need to show I bought it from them, and they said if SK starts accepting the warranty again, I'd need to have a receipt from them as well.

grr...

You have a couple of options Brad.

Go to the S-K website:
http://www.skhandtool.com/

Then try and find a REAL dealer or reseller in your area. Not the bull^%$t un-informed hacks you went to.

If you have a local reseller, take the tools to them. They will inspect them and if unsure about rreplacement, send them back to SK for assessment.

If no local dealer, call S-K or email them regarding where to send them or take them to.

Still same great lifetime warranty, They are just getting more judicious regaridng tool abuse and mis-use and what is warrantied.

Either way it's not a painful process.

Your parts store doesn't know what they're talking about. SK is honoring the warranty on tools from the old SK.

The new SK has given me really good warranty service.

I just mailed in some new and old tools. No issues getting them warrantied. Kind of sucked I had to pay shipping to get it out there but they replaced everything.

Sorry I just got off the phone with the folks at proto at 1-800-800-TOOL and the nice lady on the phone said to send it in for a replacement. I am thinking SK will also have a toll free # for the op to mail in his broken tools.

Love that Google!!!

Many SK dealers got stuck with "eating" warranty tools before and after the SK bankruptcy; no wonder there are still ill feelings and a unwillingness to deal with warranty replacements... many were left holding the "wrench" as it were. My local SK dealer had a similar response; it may take awhile for "dealers" or pre bankruptcy dealers to handle the warranty issues, SK has a uphill battle to reclaim the bad reputation it developed before and during, after the bankruptcy. I hope they do and reclaim its place as one of the few USA made tool companies that are left and make quality products, back up their warranty with service.

There does seem to be some bad blood towards SK from its past problems. Hopefully, they can change that because their current product is quite good.

Question #1 Does this Parts Store Sell SK Tools?

Question #2 If "Yes" you might want to find out if they are a "Authorized Warranty Station".

This can be done by simply calling SK, Ive clipped info from there website under "Warranty" Where it says Nothing about Receipt Requirements.

Your sole and exclusive remedy for any breach of this warranty is that SK will, at its sole option, either repair or replace the defective tool, or refund your purchase price, if you return the tool to an authorized SK warranty station. Contact SK Hand Tool LLC Customer Service at 800-822-5575 to obtain information regarding authorized warranty stations. No consequential, incidental, special, or punitive damages, or damages for property loss or personal injury, can be recovered under this warranty.

Agents and distributors of SK tools have no authority to make representations or warranties other than those contained in this warranty.

Yes.. There were tons of SK dealers who got the Shaft on Warranty Replacement Credits in the Past, This should have No bearing on Current Warranty's through Ideal. Id be leary of buying anything from them if this is the attitude they are gonna have.

When I recently needed warranty service, I called the customer service number. The woman that helped me could not have been more helpful or kind.

I sent the sockets in and they replaced them with no questions, and sent the rebuild kits I needed back with the new sockets. The whole thing took a week!

I am extreamly happy with the customer service.

Actually, the new SK had an opportunity for dealers to turn in all their backstock of warranty returns.

Here is a thread talking about the period for dealers to turn in built-up warranty tools.

So, if the dealers were on the ball, they wouldn't have had to "eat" the cost of the warranty tools. But, if dealers just threw out warranty tools before having an opportunity to turn them in, then they were probably SOL.

Are there any stores that carry the new sk products? I've been eyeing some sets online but would be nice to see it in person.

I suspect they only handled claims for the 2005-2010 Generation, The Way i Understand it the Big Warranty debacle was just previous to Stanley buying Facom in 2005. I know my local Carquest got stuck with over 10K worth of Warranty Exchanges that they didnt get Credit for. Im not saying that Ideal should have honored the 2 previous ownerships claims, But that was what really turned Retailers away from SK. <---- My Understanding based off Local dealers.

Those are good points. I didn't think about ill will from dealers that had problems during the FACOM to independent transition.

Well, I had a few thing's I sent to S-K and they replaced them ( I e-mailed them and they got back to me the the next day, I think).
Seven day turn around time from me sending the tools to getting them back from S-K.

I got a mix of old stock & new production. Except for some lighter stamping on the new stuff, they all look about the same in regards to finish.

I was in a good local SK dealer and since we talk tools a lot, he showed me some tools SK sen back and refused to warrenty. First, SK is getting tight on warrenting Chrome sockets that have had an impact wrench used on them. Second, he had 2 ratchets that SK refused because they said they had been abused. One ratchet had the handle broken in two. The other ratchet was cracked in the head and SK turned it down because the handle was bent a little, indicating cheater bar use. I check all used sockets I'm thinking about buying for impact gun use now.

Are you referencing the SK under Ideal or Previous regime? BTW Im glad SK upholds there warranty, Its hard enough to be competitive in the US market without dealing with donkeys who fail to use the right tool for the Job.

Current S-K warranty work has a few levels to get thru.

My closest "true" S-K dealer and warranty house is 45 miles north of me in Dayton, OH. 3 local reps/dealers (one is a Snap-On truck) but all are not a true keep stock around and let you grab it dealer.

My Dayton dealer keeps most everything that is online physically in stock and is a warranty rep. They know their shiz.

It's still so new that S-K is doing baby steps.

Still an awesome product. Just growing and getting foothold on limited level.

E-mail S-k at site above and ask for local sourcing. If no local, ask for regional.

As for the warranty issues, they are just standing by the legal fine print to keep themselves solvent. I have no issue with that. At all.

I have No issues with SK Warranty, Ive swapped out 2 ratchet repair kits in my 20+ years Hobby Wrenching, This was done over the Phone. My Grandfather had a full set of SK tools in 1/4" - 3/4" drive and dont recall him ever breaking anything and he was a Farmer back when you worked on your own equipment. There's a fine line between Manufacturing/Selling Affordable tools here in the US and Warranting everything that walks in the Door. Obviously.. Snap on comes to mind, there Customer service is 1st Rate, No questions asked warranty and there is a Price that comes with that service. BTW.. Ive Never Wrenched for a Living, and i understand time is money and its not always convenient to go get the proper tool, Thats why you pay extra for the Service Truck tools provide on top of the inovative tools that Help mechanics earn there living.

Hiball,

The rather large dealer is a long time dealer under the old SK and continues under the new SK. The new SK has tightened warrenty rules somewhat.

I only deal with SK directly for warranty issues because Im geographically screwed. However, SK has always provided prompt service. I appreciate the tightened warranty because it allows SK to provide better service for people that actually need a tool warrantied.

With that said, i got tired of dealing with Ma and Pa "dealers". The new SK is basically SK in name only with a fresh, modern factory, and a return to their formerly legendary reliability. If the dealer network improved they would be superb.

My local SK dealer has told me they would warranty any SK tool new or old. They have been SK dealers for over 30 years. They sold Wright tools for a couple of years when SK went under. When Idea bought SK they started to sell SK again.
