I need some schooling on these two different style heads. When I look for the sk3896 they seem to be harder to find and I don't see any rebuild kits anywhere. Facom design? Will facom internals work in the SK3896 or SK42475 tuff1? :dunno:

both are 1/2" drive 72 tooth ratchets.

the 3896 is a palm control ratchet 10.4 inches long and would take a 3896-2 rebuild kit. it was the only 1/2 drive version in that style. i can't say for sure but i doubt that the facom kits will fit. i have not seen them to compare but i have seen the 3/8" drives side by side and they appear slightly different. none of the palm controls in any drive size were made in large numbers and were only in a few sets. to the best of my knowledge, the 1/4" ratchets only came in a small set of shallow set of sae or metric 6 point sockets on a rail or individually. the 3/8 ratchet cam in similar shallow sets and also the 45 piece spline drive set of shallow and deep, metric and sae. i do not know of any sets that included the 1/2"drive ratchet. they were only four different palm control ratchets. the 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" (3866, 3886 and 3896, add -2 to the number for the rebuild kit) drive standard handles and a 3/8 drive angle head ratchet that had an offset handle.

edit. oops i lied, there was also a 1/4" drive low profile pal control ratchet that claimed to have a 20% thinner head. it had a model number of 3867. i found no info on a rebuild kit for it

the 42475 is a tuff 1 10.3 inches long and for a while kits were not available. i know that 1/4 and 3/8 kits were not available for a while but my dealer had received some a while back so i beleive the 1/2 is now available also. the 1/2" tuff 1 was also available in 15" and 17.2" flex handle versions (40175 long and 42775 flex) and use the same kit. they were made in much larger numbers and were quite popular.

the palm control used a different cap and screw. i think the pawl and spring may interchange but not sure of the body. i have 3/8" drive versions of each ratchet but i have not swapped them to see for sure and even if they were the same that does not mean the 1/2" would swap for sure.

i beleive proto and armstrong have copies of the tuff 1 but i have no idea if they would interchange. someday i may order the armstrong 3/8" indexing ratchet from epstein's for chits and grins to see if works, well that and i could use another ratchet.:spit:
