Hey guys, So I think i've decided on about a 12x18 storage building. And I think I am gonna do a skid type foundation for it. This will be my first time building something like this, so excuse me if I sound like a newb...haha. I know the basics of building a skid from reading on here and other articles on the internet. Gravel or concrete footings, blocks or pre-cast pier blocks supporting the beam, then the floor joists on top of that. Also, I'm in East TN. so I dont think freezing ground will be too big of an issue.
But my main questions is what size material to use for my main supporting beam and what spacing on the blocks do I need to support my building without over-kill(kinda on a budget)? Would (2) 2x8's nailed together be sufficient for my beams if I do 3 piers along the 18' length?(Piers @ 1', 9', and 17') And i'll probably cantilever my floor joists(2x6's 16" o.c.) 1' on each side, so my beams will only be 10' apart.
I got a good idea of how i'm gonna frame it in my head, just really need to know what size material would be sufficient? If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
