I bought a Skil Saw back in the early '80s to replace the previous Skil I burned up. Recently, I took this saw completely apart, cleaned it, and regreased the ball bearings, new brushes, etc. The only thing I noticed of appreciable wear was the pinion gear cut on the end of the armature. The teeth are like knife blades.
Now.....I'm a bit confused on the 'family' of this Slil Saw. I was told the armature from the 552 would fit(predecessor to my 5625)...most likely. But then there's the 553 as well? My original Operating Guide includes the 5625, 5650, and 5665. My 5625 is 6 1/2" while the others I believe are 7 1/4". I don't think that matters on the armature part #? I have the original # itself for the replacement armature but of course, it's been NLA for decades. Probably some NOS ones have gone through eBay, but I've not been that lucky.
However, if I knew every conceivable Skil Saw model that used the same armature, I could expand my search parameters. I've built barns with this saw....and an almost inconceivable amount of projects over my lifetime with it. It still works fine, but I gotta attend to the armature issue soon. It doesn't make sense to me to gamble on a used one from eBay in the same 'family'. For one thing, it will have a lot of mileage, even well taken care of, and secondly, if there is one place that will show similar wear, it will be that armature pinion gear. By the time I pay shipping and state sales tax on the purchase, buying an unseen used item is not that attractive to me.
