Skil Saw model question

I bought a Skil Saw back in the early '80s to replace the previous Skil I burned up. Recently, I took this saw completely apart, cleaned it, and regreased the ball bearings, new brushes, etc. The only thing I noticed of appreciable wear was the pinion gear cut on the end of the armature. The teeth are like knife blades.

Now.....I'm a bit confused on the 'family' of this Slil Saw. I was told the armature from the 552 would fit(predecessor to my 5625)...most likely. But then there's the 553 as well? My original Operating Guide includes the 5625, 5650, and 5665. My 5625 is 6 1/2" while the others I believe are 7 1/4". I don't think that matters on the armature part #? I have the original # itself for the replacement armature but of course, it's been NLA for decades. Probably some NOS ones have gone through eBay, but I've not been that lucky.

However, if I knew every conceivable Skil Saw model that used the same armature, I could expand my search parameters. I've built barns with this saw....and an almost inconceivable amount of projects over my lifetime with it. It still works fine, but I gotta attend to the armature issue soon. It doesn't make sense to me to gamble on a used one from eBay in the same 'family'. For one thing, it will have a lot of mileage, even well taken care of, and secondly, if there is one place that will show similar wear, it will be that armature pinion gear. By the time I pay shipping and state sales tax on the purchase, buying an unseen used item is not that attractive to me.

I can't really help you, but I was trying to identify Black & Decker armatures for the same reason basically.
they were undercut saws for flooring under the CRAIN name . replacements thru CRAIN were stupid expensive . I did find that they were basic B&D saw bodies with altered business ends . I searched & searched & searched until I was fairly confident on the right model. then I searched local classifieds for those model numbers. was able to find a saw for under $30 . worst case , I had a saw if the armature wasn't the right one. it turned out to be correct . so I continued my search for 1 more.

Well, I did remember I found the exact armature I wanted for $99 on eBay before shipping and tax. It was NOS.....I thought it was insanely priced and passed. But after days and days of research and nothing......I went back to bite the bullet and buy, but the gun had fired.

I hate the whole Facebook and Craigslist scene for a number of reasons....but I'm likely to find something there I can afford.

The he** of it is......I know somebody out there has a whole mountain of Skil used parts resplendent with armatures and field coils.

Well, found a used 5650, which will have the correct armature. Good price, and decent shipping. The problem is the armature pinion could be as bad as mine or worse. It's a rough-looking saw. Do I roll the dice.........

Just as an addendum to this thread.......

The used 5650 7 1/4" looked hopeful. Same amp rating etc. I finally got everything pulled apart. What Skill did was make one armature for the 5625, 5650 & 5665. But when they came down to mine, the 5625 6 1/2" saw....they shortened the pinion shaft just a bit and visibly turned down the circumference of the pinion shaft to match a smaller bull gear in the gearbox. Otherwise, they are identical. If I knew someone with a small machine lathe, they could turn the 5650 armature down. But, they'd also have to recut the spiral teeth. Too much to pay someone @$100/hr.

I was so optimistic.....oh well, now I'll only hold out for a 5625 saw or maybe the rare NOS armature on eBay.

I'm really surprised Skil went to all that trouble to make those model differences.

No, won't work, read above. The armature has to be for the smaller 6 1/2" Skil saws(5625). I had the two armatures side-by-side. The 5650 armature has a bigger diameter pinion and fits against a larger bull gear in the gearbox. The armature listed in your link is for a 7 1/4" Skil saw. That would have been an $81.09 mistake plus shipping.

The correct part # for my saw is 2610327517 If you dig into that site you will pull up the IPL for the 5625, and you'll see that correct part # for my armature. It's been NLA for decades, probably because of the lower production numbers of the 5625.
