Been looking to add another powered screwdriver to my collection for use around small projects and such. I've found this Skil 4volt cordless screwdriver - what are your thoughts on it?

For $25 on sale it seems like a hard deal to pass up on.

What do you plan on doing with it?

If for around the house or for the odd quickey job, sure (especially if you have any type of arthritis or hand issues), but in the same way I'd say just buy a used Snap-On ratcheting screwdriver (no batteries to go bad) or step up to something like the small Bosch units where you know you can get parts and batteries along with customer support for decades.

Those mini battery drivers usually end up in the kitchen junk drawer (and trust me, every girl I have dated has had one, usually a decade old that their dad got them that they used maybe once) and are usually made so that if the batteries ever go bad (and they will), it's not worth the cost of replacement so they get pitched (and they do). Or wind up at garage sales. LOLOLOLOL.

If you do, say, electrical outlet work daily or as a professional and don't have money for pro tools or say dismantle electronics for scrap or recycling, those drivers will do in a pinch.

BUT-----In the end they are underpowered unitasker homeowner grade tools that do a job that any screwdriver can do but without the power, quality or mfgr support that the "big boy" tools provide. You pay to play.

You couldn't give me one of those Skil drivers for free.
Just like dogbone wrenches and gator grip sockets.

Your money your choice.
Good luck.

It has a light and an offset attachment. Skill is a div. of Bosch and I love all my Skill tools. I don't own one, try before you buy @ Lowes.

While a div. of Bosch, the tool architecture system Skil uses of quick and constant changes in the line (planned obsolescence) along with lack of compatability and availability of previous generation tool parts and batteries that is not well supported in my eyes is the pitfall. Or at least in the US.

I consider Skil the "BluePoint" version of Bosch. Some tools are supported well, most are not.

There are a lot of crappier products out there than Skil keep in mind, but it's made to a price-point, not a quality level in many if not most cases these days.

The older Skil tools are quite good. But then again I own Bosch Switz. and Bosch Germany made tools that far surpass the current Bosch China products.

Times change -----but you still get what you pay for.

Skil. Bleh.

I'd just pick up a small 12v driver. It'll do a lot more than a little 4v will - we have a few 12v drills and impacts here in the lab and they've essentially supplanted all the 18v stuff.

I won a pair of these from a link someone put up on this site. One has a wine bottle opener attachment, and the other one is pink. I can't say how they work yet because I haven't had a need for a screwdriver since they came in the mail a few days ago, but given the size of them, I don't think they'd be good in tight spaces. We'll see...

Wine, anyone?

Yeah I know this won't build a car for me, but I'm thinking light duty work. Maybe a good little tool to have for my radio controlled car hobby or small odd and end jobs.
