Evening…
So, this was my eighth time pouring concrete, I’ve done four for my own projects. I thought nothing of it. Something went wrong and I stupidly crawled into the middle of the pad to screed a stubborn spot.
Wet concrete contains alkaline, which is a base. It burns like acid. I have third degree burns on my hands and knees, and the slab surface is absolute garbage as I wasn’t able to do the finish work/my helpers didn’t really know what they were doing. It wasn’t a big slab either, but I was using 5000 psi ready mix, which is a bit hotter I believe.
I am dumb. Very much so. This could take months to heal, it’s incredibly painful, and the burn clinic only treats these on Thursdays. Having happened on a Friday, I’m in a constant cycle of scrubbing my wounds clean just to stay ready for the surgery, if they can do anything. All because I thought I could crawl in wet concrete for a bit.
So, don’t be dumb like me. Wear muck boots, safety glasses, gloves, have a hose nearby, maybe some leg skates if you’re hand finishing.
