skylight condensation?

the skylight on the roof of the garage has ice and moisture around the wood work of the skylight so i pulled the interior trim off and see about 1/4 inch gap behind it where it seems the moisture and ice are building up. i want to perhaps silicone it or something, it is made of polycarbonate. have had steady 70 degree heat in garage but its been -20 to -45 outside. thanks

Not sure what you're trying to prevent? The only cure for the condensation I can see is stop parking in the garage when it's really cold out LOL. Seriously though, try squeeging the snow/water out of the garage. All that moisture evaporating is causing your condensation and the colder it gets the worse it gets.

whats happening is the ice and condensation run down the wood trim taking the stain off and streaking the white drywall ceiling {with the cheap stain that was applied to the trim} and finally dripping down all over everything. this skylight was made by a company in elkhart,indiana caled c.o. tool,inc. but they are probably out of business.

Yeah, not much you can do about it other than lower the humidy level in the garage. Do you have other windows in the garage? Are they getting water/ice around them?

well, thanks, i guess i'll take the trim boards and find a good uv/water sealer and redo them and maybe silicone around the inside edges of the skylight and hope for the best

If you make a storm window for it it should lessen the condensation

Come to think of it, a garage should have little condensation compared to a house. Is your gas heater leaking?

nope just the difference between 70 degress inside and minus 25-45 below wind chill with skylight facing west and lots of snow on roof

How are you heating?
Is your furnace vented?
If not you are adding combustion moisture to the moisture from the slop that drips off the car.
You might want to "waste" some heat with a humidstat controled vent fan.
