I am in the process of prepping for a slab. This is in my 40x60 pole building. The concrete guy was here the other day to set "pins for his height and slope" Basically rebar pounded in the ground to different depths so we could slope the sand a little bit.

Now i am left with about 30 pieces of rebar sticking out of the ground. This is going to make putting down vapour barrier and 2 inch insulation a nightmare? Is there any other options. Can we not set them after the insulation is on? Why have a vapour barrier that looks like swiss cheese?

What do other Concrete guys do? Options?

Thanks for your help

My friend used small wooden stakes on day of pour. Be careful about those pieces of rebar sticking up. Could cause serious damage if someone falls on them. They sell orange caps made to cover the tops at masonry supply houses and some big box stores. Talk to the mason maybe he could reset them after the work is done.

Thanks Red, I just dont want him to punch through the vapour barrier if he does need them before the pour? I wouldn't mind something just sticking in the 2 inches of foam before they pour. I have seen pictures of guys laying down the vapour barrier and foam and have seen no "Pins" just looking for other ideas?
THanks

Seems like the obvious thing to do is pull the rebar pins, lay your insulation and vapor barrier, then get the concrete guy to find his grades some other way.

Yeah the mason is the "Best" In the business, 35 years experience so I have heard. Used laser level for the pins as we did final 2 inches of sand. He said he needs them for running screed board. Is this "Old School"?

Thanks guys for all your input!

I'm confused. Did he set the rebar pins for screeding the leveling sand or are they for screeding the concrete? If it was for the sand, the tops of the rebar should be level with the sand and you can lay your vapor barrier and insulation on top of the sand without fear of puncture. If the rebar pins are elevations for screeding the concrete, then he will have to pull the pins after screeding or you will have thirty steel pins showing in your floor. If the pins are for finding finish level of the concrete, you cannot install a true vapor barrier with that system. You need to talk to your concrete guy and ask him how he is going to allow for vapor barrier and insulation.

He can laser screed his concrete. The guy needs to learn how to do that anyway. You just float out spots in the slab with the laser then use your screed board to run screed lines. Then just screed off of these lines.
