I'm trying to figure out how to transition from my slab, which has a 10" thick edge and 2" of rigid pink insulation vertically on it, to an apron (to be poured) out front of it. I live in northern wisonsin, lots of frost heave. My other garage slab heaves about 2". I'm thinking one good way would be to pour the apron about 12" from the existing slab, and fill this gap with gravel/rock. Once this is done, place a 1/2" thick aluminum plate 16" wide, and as long as the garag door is wide over the gap, with a little mechanism to keep it in position.... Plase post whatever pics you have or can take of this area! Thanks a bunch!

Don't know if this is what you mean or not, but when the concrete crew poured mine, they drilled into the garage floor and the sidewalk, then added 1/2" rebar ~ every 3' all the way across. My apron is 21' x 32'. That was this past April. I don't think it will heave tho. Hope this helps.

You could use pavers for an apron. It's a popular choice here in NJ.
The base is always crushed stone and this allows water to runoff, stopping the frost heave.

I mention this because I too have issues up to my apron. There is a 2" gap between the asphalt and the concrete floor.
