I saw a router bit that will allow you to essentially make your own slat wall.

Anyone here done it? i wonder how much of a pain it would be to paint.

where do you get the hardware?

I get my hardware from Sears and Lowe's. Just have to modify them a little. I did not make my own board and I painted it with an air gun.

When I did a makeover on my 20x20 attached garage...I bought slatwall at Home Depot. I think it was $37 a sheet with low pressure white laminate. Now, it's up to $43.

I found that a whole sheet is more $ up front...but in the end, you can put things anwhere you want.

How big are those sheets? I would like to buy 4x8' sheets or I will have to make my own!

I have thought about purchasing a slatwall router bit and making my own version of slatwall strips ( http://www.diamondlifegear.com/slatwallstrip.html ). I was thinking about making them out of oak. I think they would make a nice "stripe" around the garage and be real handy for hanging stuff.

Unless you have a tree to cut into boards Oak (dressed ) is $$$$.

Sorry....they are 4'x8'...horizontal.

I mounted the slatwall from the celing down, tileboard from the floor up.

(Split level house garages have low ceilings)

Unless you are really passionate about making this stuff yourself...Check Craigslist...Retail stores use this stuff by the mile and there is ALWAYS some of it up for sale, and usually for not very much money...stores going out of business, etc.

That's a French cleat. Been around a long time for hanging just about anything.

French cleats are much simpler. A french cleat is easy and cheap to make. Just rip some stock on a 45° angle. Standard 3/4" thick boards or plywood works well.

Once you have a single french cleat running around the shop walls you can use it to hang cabinets and sheets of pegboard or even your slat-wall. Pegboard hooks are readily available and cheap sometimes free. Pegboard is much cheaper than slat-wall.

With a french cleat setup you can move and rearrange your cabinets, pegboard, or slat-wall anytime with ease.

I know. I was suggesting it because it is perhaps a better solution than cutting your own slatwall. Similar look, but you can do more with it as Torque points out.

I think that slatwall without aluminum inserts can only support about 25-35lbs. To get the kind with alumnium inserts, you have to order from a supplier for retail stores and you are looking at $80-$100 per sheet.

The french cleat solution is much cheaper and can handle much more weight if you want to hang cabinets or heavy tools.

absolutely cheapest way to get heavy duty slat board is to find an outlet store that's going out of business and literally buy the walls off the liquidator. I purchased lots of slat wall from a linen warehouse store that went out of business last year for almost no money.
