Anybody here use slat wall for storage in their garage? Given the amount of retail stores closing here in Michigan, it has become plentiful. I have been given a lot of it. To me I don’t think it would hold much weight. Any opinions?

One slatwall website I was looking at listed the single point limit for fiberboard slatwall at 20lbs. I intend to put it into my garage since it's so much cheaper than the Gladiator stuff. I just figured I'd use more hooks to hang each item. Because it's fiberboard, it's certainly not good in wet environments.

It seems like the metal inserts you can put into retail slatwall would spread the load across more surface area and increase the load rating, too.

Tone's garage is very, very nice. His is the one that got me looking at slatwall in the first place. Tone, have you had any issues with the slatwall breaking under too much weight?

Hi,

Some slat wall has plastic or metal inserts that go into the slats. This increases the load it can carry. I did most of my old garage with it. The slat wall that I used came from a retail store and had laminate on the top surface.

It looked great and was a lot easier to work with than a proper drywall job.

I tried to buy some last week but it was to beat up to use.

I have 2 2' x 3' sheets that have an aluminum reinforcement in the slats. They are also glued to 3/4" mdf. the rest of the stuff I have (including 3 4' x 8' sheets) is just fiberboard with a thin melimite coating on the outside.
I does look nice in all the picks. I dont see anybody hanging anything real heavy though. I think I will just hang air and pressure washing hose and that sort of stuff.
I am clearing out the barn now to get ready to pour the concrete, and I am starting to get excited about having a REAL shop. I just wish I had funds to put pex in the floor for future heat.
