Slatwall hooks that don't fall off?

I have plenty of slatwall in my garage, and for now have some regular store fixture hooks. But now I want to really outfit it nice, and would like to have hooks and shelf brackets that have a more positive grip to the slatwall and won't dislodge when bumped.I know that a lot of stuff has become available in the last few years as far as accessories.

I appreciate suggestions,thanks.

If you're not going to move the hooks, you could lock them in place with pre-drilled holes and screws (I assume we're talking about regular fiberboard slatwall). What about adding the metal inserts into the slots? I have found that the hooks stay in place better when the inserts are used, since there's less room for them to flop around.

Your issue is one of the reasons I decided against slatwall and went with gridwall. Those hooks all have holes for inserting a screw that locks the hook in place.

Yes,the slatwall I have has metal inserts, much nicer,10x stronger.Only a small part of the garage is slatwall,so yeah, the idea is to have complete flexability and not have to use a fastener of any kind.

I saw this in Home Depot, took it backto a piece of slatwall and it did not fit.

Close,but not really.

I guess there is a whole bunch of "slatwall-like" products out there that use proprietary fittings, kind of defeats the idea of having universal fittings

This is why I am planning to run french cleats up and down and all along my walls. I figure for the cost of two 8' slat rails, I can have I think 19 8' runs of 3 inch wide french cleats. I plan to go every 12 inches up the wall. 1 sheet of inexpensive plywood would cost the same as 2 of the extruded plastic rails and would almost cover an entire wall at the spacing I am doing. If I wanted more, I could just add another sheet of plywood to rip down and double the space.

Got the idea from here: http://www.familyhandyman.com/DIY-P...-Storage/customizable-garage-storage/View-All

And when I mentioned it here on the forum, someone stated "french cleat" and gave me a lot of stuff to search for since I didn't know that is what the term was.

Using cheaper hooks and accessories on brackets cut from plywood scraps laying around would be much cheaper as well. Those stupid proprietary hooks and accessories are stupidly expensive for what they are. I plan on doing a before/after garage post on the forum when the weather finally breaks (11° is too cold for me to be working in the garage) as I couldn't pull a powerwheels car into my garage as of about 2 weeks ago, that is how messy it is. A 21x22 foot garage filled to where you can barely walk in is a lot of ****. Time to get it organized.

I use slatwall accessories from here...

I go in person, but I know they ship. The things are really reasonable. I don't have the problem the OP is talking about....but I'm thinking you could drill a hole into the "flange" on the standard hooks and screw 'em to the wall.

I too have slatwall hooks. I have the same problem With the hook moving when pulling my tools off of them. I haven't got around to it yet but I'm want to put a small piece of dbl sided carpet tape to the back of the flange and see how that works. I don't need much strength just something to keep in place. A lot less work than drilling.

This sounds like the best option. I would use double sided foam tape. This would be semi-permanent, but could be changed later with a little work, and wouldn't leave any drilled holes.

I am sure that almost everyone understands the issue, but here are some photos to illustrate it:

Obviously,if you had something hooked on to the chrome hook, like a box wrench, and lifted it up and off,the hook itself would tip upward and dislodge.
The lower black hook seems to have some type of cam that grabs a lower slot in the panel and positively holds it in place.

Of course the cost to make the lower black hook is much greater, but in a garage you aren't looking to outfit a 20,000 sq. ft. retail store.Being that there has to be billions of square feet of slatwall installed out there, there must be positive locking hooks for it readily available? I got to believe that someone knows where to find them.

I know this is an older thread, but for those who use the search function and stumble across this like I did, you might find this useful.

They make a clip that is designed to prevent hooks from popping out of slatwall. They are called "Hook-LOK" and should work on a variety of different hooks and slatwalls - although obviously they won't work in every application.

Here are a few links, but if these die in the future just search for "Hook-LOK" and you should find them.

Now if I could just find something to prevent some of my gladiator hooks from popping out I'd be set. storeWALL seems to have the best system I have found with their cam design, but the prices on individual hooks could break the bank.

Would a dab from a hot glue gun work for this?

I think that might depend upon the type of slatwall. For some of the plastic composites I'd guess glue was peel right off with little effort. However on some of the painted wood slatwall, a drop of glue might help.

I know the suggestions of adding screws would work, but one benefit of these systems is flexibility, and if you screw holes all over your slatwall you won't want to be sliding things around very often.

This is probably one of those cases where you need to pay a bit more for one of the systems that has a cam-lock to prevent the hooks from falling out. However, at upwards of $15 a piece for some of those hooks, this can be a very expensive proposition.

We sure have come a long way from the 16 penny nails my father used to hang up almost everything.

Thanks Costner! I bought some of the hook-lok things and they are great. I'm using them on flow wall and cheapo hooks from Menards. They were 50 cents a piece.
