Slatwall??? Need advice asap

I love slat wall!! When I build my garage I will use about 5-6 pieces. I am going up 4 feet w/ metal than sheet rock the rest. The new sheets of slat wall are 4x8 so in a few spots I will replace some sheet rock w/ it. Also I am going to have a 8 foot work bench and will rip a piece in half to put right behind it so it would be 2x16.
I already have a hundred or so slat wall hooks, you can find deals on them all over the net. I think it looks better and is more sturdy than peg board, but 5X's as much. Just my $.02

I got the black Slat wall in these pictures for $20 a 4x8 sheet.
What you are seeing is 4 sheets installed in a 24x24 garage. Happy with it so far, and you can use pegboard hardware but it will not be as strong.

So, would anyone do an entire garage in this stuff? Looks like a few of you have only done sections. Was this a cost concern?
Also:
1. Can this stuff be painted?
2. Should I rip out the existing drywall where I hang this stuff? Does it need to be hung on the studs directly, or can I hang over drywall if I just make sure to hit studs.
3. Anyone ever seen an entire garage in this stuff? I could probably do the whole garage, or just the back wall.
Thanks again for the input, need to make a choice tonight as to whether or not I should go pick this stuff up.

1. Depends on the product. Some can be painted. Some can't. Paint will eventually wear off.
2. Again depends on the product. If it's a common wall to the house, the drywall needs to remain intact as it helps achieve a building code mandated 1 hour separation between the two spaces.
3. I think doing an entire garage is over kill. Put it where you plan to hang loose items. Putting it behind cabinetry seems like a waste to me.

Hell, if it's free, I'd get it whether you use one piece or every piece. What you don't use, someone else may be able to. At least you'd have it.
I was given alot of commercial flat wall (2'x4' pcs.). All I had to do was remove it before the remodel of the clothing store. I hung it on three sides of my garage. I have 8' ceilings and hung from the top 4' down. I have shelving or power bench tools below. I love it. You must screw into the stud (right thru the drywall) for strength. I use a mixture of slatwall hooks and pegboard hooks. The pegboard hooks are not as firm and slide or fall off when you remove your tool. I have the kind with the plastic back so I solved the problem by drilling a small hole into the plastic and keeping it in place with a drywall screw. I say go for it. You'll find a use for it.

I have to agree. It is very functional. We have done complete garages and partial. If you do the entire garage(floor to ceiling) remember that it's MDF and the bottom pieces are probably going to get. That can create a problem. Does the slatwall come with the aluminum inserts? Much stronger with the inserts than without. Try http://www.garagestore.netif you need hooks,baskets etc. Bottom line is it's free and it's functional go for it.
Slatwall is fantastic. I covered my entire garage in it (will post pics soon). I get the fixtures off of craigslist. I love the versatility. High end custom homes in my area are putting it in garages starting at $4000 without any fixtures (and it's the cheap plastic slatwall). I found mine from a video store that was closing and did my whole garage for $150.
Here's an intstallation tip. Nail a 2x4 at the level you want the bottom of the slatwall (make sure it is level). Set the slatwall on top and screw into the studs. You cannot go wrong by putting slatwall up.
