When we bought our house in 2005 it was 13 years old. Nice ranch, brick on the front, steep roof, sunken living with cathedral ceiling and floor to ceiling brick veneer fire place.
But the garage was only half finished. The original owner who had the house build, apparently told the builder to stop the drywall where the code stopped. The 2nd owner put insulation between the studs and poly up on the walls and friction fit insulation between the ceiling trusses and held it up there with chicken wire (I'm NOT making this up).
Oh ... only one electrical outlet in the entire garage and one light on a pull cord plus the light on the garage door opener.
I thought about finishing it, putting up sheet rock on the walls and ceiling, putting in more outlets, putting up with flourescent lights.
Then I found the Garage Journal and got some ideas.
I put in two additional outlets (two 15amp duplex outlets in double boxes, one GFCI); one pair by the big garage door and the other pair half way back on the north wall.
I have slatwalled the walls from floor to ceiling and put slatwall above the garage door. Next step is to put steel siding on the ceiling. I had a bid of $1,500 to rock, mud, tape, sand, and spray to get drywall. I have about $450 in the 10 pieces slatwall (with some miscellaneous pieces left over).
My GF says it looks so much better than the insulation and it makes the garage much brighter. Probably easier to work on the race car.
I hope you like my garage! Excuse the clutter.
