So I picked up a slide hammer the other day thinking it may be a handy addition to the toolbox. I have a few pullers that I can use on it and plan to pick up more pullers as I go along.

Does anyone have a source for reasonably priced accessories...hooks, thread adaptors, etc?

Anyone have good examples of homemade accessories for their slide hammer? Lets see some pics.

My favorite one (no current pic) is a vise grip welded to a slide hammer. I've made a couple. Not really built on the standard 5/8-18 thread stuff. Very useful for pulling dowel pins set into blind holes and other tasks where you must pull straight without using damaging leverage.

The most important key imo is to place a ring or a couple of large washers so the pulling can take place so the operator doesn't smash their fingers :)

I also saw a person who had a home-brew slide hammer with something like a 1/4-20 internal thread. Then he had taken and welded short socket head bolts together. One side was always the 1/4-20 and the other was a wide assortment of SAE and metric sizes. Armed with that, there was no internally tapped "pull dowel" which couldn't be easily removed. It was a little shorter for working inside machinery (in a manufacturing plant) than the one in your typical "slide hammer kit".

Armed with a lathe and welder they are very easy to assemble. Just drill a piece of solid-round for the hammer-weight for the same size of the shaft and then bore it .010" over that and you have the basic mechanism.

I yank nails out of reclaimed pallets with vise grips on my slide hammer. Stubborn cotter pins too. I didn't homemake it or weld anything though. I use the adapter that came with my 10-way slide hammer set. OTC sells them separately as a "Grip Wrench Adapter".

One thing though, if you do make something like it, you will want to use old USA Peterson Dewitt vise grips. The new China ones won't work. They just pop open.

I was thinking about welding something up for the vise grip. Might be worth just ordering the adaptor.

I have an old pair of vice grips that I welded some 1/2" steel to the jaws I use for pulling pins on heavy equipment. I just weld the steel plate to the pin the use the slide hammer with a vice grip adapter to yank it out, then I cut the steel off. Once the steel is too short I weld a new chunk on.

I'll snap a pic on Monday, it's a pretty simple set up.

most of mine involved a 5/8 fine thread nut, welded to a bolt of the proper size for pulling shafts that have a threaded hole in the end.

I have a few I made, one is a 5/16" grab hook for a chain. I used a clevis for a semi truck brake chamber, being it is 5/8" 18 like the threads on the hammer. The others are bolts welded to u bolt nuts, which are the same thread only longer. These are used for pulling pins with threaded ends.

I bought a cheap stud welder a few years ago to pull some dents. The device that is supposed to grip the pins to pull the dent just wouldn't hold. I bought a keyless drill chuck, threaded the end of the slide hammer to accept it, and use the chuck to grip the pins. Works like a charm.

I'll snap a few pics I've made a few different puller attachments. All fairly recently...
One for straightening a trailer fender, another deep panel hook to pull the dent out of a dash. I've welded up a few adapters. We have the 12lb body hammer kit. An old Hub puller and a few other accessories.

I'd like to build more looking forward to this thread...

Just ordered a cheap keyless drill chuck off ebay to give this a try with.

I have a dedicated pair that stay with my puller. This is the OTC adapter.

I was hoping to get an adapter for medium sized vice grips. Not seeing a good option to order it. Being in Canada, amazon.ca seems to be my cheapest option for ordering the adapters. I can get the large one for $25 or a set of the 3 different sizes for $45.
or there is still the option of welding. not sure what is the best option.

You could weld a nut to the Vise Grip adjusting bolt.

I have Polaris ATV's - not sure that would work. Seems too thick to fit behind the axle where it goes into the diff housing and Polaris axles don't have that ridge on them to keep the puller from slipping off.

I forgot this tip....thread a nut on the slide hammer before threading the chuck on. Use the nut to jam the chuck or else the chuck will tend to unscrew itself.
