Guys I am in need of a slide hammer with a 1/4 20 screw on the end to replace the seals in my outboard lower unit. I started looking and I can't seem to find one that has the screw end except one with a 5/8ths. This isn't a tool I will use often so I don't need to go off the truck on this one. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks guys!

Might either make an adapter to what ever you have to get the 1/4"-20, or make a quickee out of some 1/4"-20 threaded rod. Shouldn't take much to whip one up for a one time job.

These are CJ93 from SO. The threads are 5/16", not what you are after but maybe it points you in the right direction?

Without knowing what type of tools you have at your disposal I think 454 gave you the best suggestion. Either completely threaded rod, or a long smooth rod with a short section of 1/4-20 thread on the ends. Then a small length of ~1.5" pipe with with threaded caps on each end. Drill a clearance hole in each cap to use as the hammer weight. You won't need tones of force to pull a seal.

What motor are you working on out of curiosity?

Just make one, Tool and die makers make them all the time. Get some 1/4" all thread washers threaded couplings. The hardest part is drilling a hole threw a piece of round bare stock but you could do it with a hand drill.

If you have a welder and won't to make a good one post back saying sow. The bellow photos are ones from the net but will give you some ideas. You can replace the vise grips with any type bolt or screw if needed. I found this thread looking for photos this is a nice set http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=117179

In response to a couple of you:

The motor is a 40hp evinrude outboard 1989

I do have a small Hobart sick welder

That 1/4 all thread idea with the pipe and caps is a good idea!

Guys thanks for all your recommendations. I ended up taking the make your own advice with the all thread, pipe, nuts, and washers. The first picture is terrible. Sorry my cousin was in charge of pictures since my hands were covered in grease.

I found this problem during the rebuild. Luckily I had anticipated it and had a brand new one ready.

Ready for the water check!

I've made several adapters for the slide hammer by taking a bolt the size I want and weld a nut that matches thread of my slide hammer on the head of the bolt.
