Sliding drawer within a drawer?

I keep my sockets in a deep drawer in my bottom rollaway. The deep well sockets wont stand up in the shallow drawers, but there's a good bit of wasted space in the deep drawer. I was thinking of making a sliding drawer to fit on the side walls, about 1/2 as wide as the drawer that could slide back and forth on top of the sides, so I wouldn't lose access to the sockets below. My initial thoughts were simply some plywood with UHMW (slippery plastic) to ride on the side walls, but now I'm thinking of braking some sheet metal. Anyone do something like this? (Or understand what the hell I'm saying?:headscrat)

Snap-on (as well as others) have drawer trays like you describe....shouldn't be too hard to bend one up...

I understand the idea, and its not a bad one. My only concern would be, as soon as you put some tall stuff in the drawer, the tray will no longer have anywhere to slide to.

Would it waste less space to move the sockets up to a shallow drawer and lay the deep sockets flat? Or maybe at an angel?

I have one of these trays in my truck toolbox, use it to hold my wrenches and I love it.

I threw this together last weekend from a piece of galv sheetmetal I found in my shop. A little lube on the rails and it moves great, takes up little space, freed up anothe drawer, and gets my ratchets with my sockets.
