Sliding garage door

Anyone install a sliding door rather than overhead? I want a 10' door but have some height limitations. Much obliged for any advice!

I've used sliding barn door hardware on several projects. Available at any farm supply store and easy to use. I've even used it on some 4' "man" doors where swing space was at a premium.

When I was a kid, we had sliding doors on barns. I can tell you that they really **** if you get snow.

I had them on one shop, and hated them. They are drafty, not that secure, and if anything gets under them it's a hassle.

That said, in the right place, where swing or roll up isn't an option, they do the job within their limitations.

How about two 5 ft swinging doors?

I have two on my shop: one is an 8x8 and the other is an 11x10 or so. I like them and don't seem to have the problems others have outlined. I have about 1-2 inches of clearance between the bottom of the big door and the gravel below. Never had anything get jammed or stuck in 6 years. The drafty argument is valid -- I live in an area where the temps are mild so it's not a problem for me. The locking mechanisms I use are catches with lever cams and you'd have to destroy the door to get in. That said, you cannot unlock them from the outside -- again, not a problem in my application. I like the look better than rollup, kind of takes me back to the 'ole days.' I also found them better with regard to overhead clearance. Makes the inside fully open.

But they're not for everyone.

I built 2 bi fold doors to enclose my 10 ft tall 14 ft wide opening with no room for slider barrel or roll up door. I wouldn't want to heat the room because the doors have a gap but they keep birds, rain and leaves out very well. I could post some pics if someone tells me how if you were interested in something like that.

I'd love to see some pics of your bifold setup. You say you built 2 doors - is this 2 doors with 2 panels each? Did you use standard slding box rail hardware?

That's a new one on me. Must be a story behind it. Need to add some curtain weights in the corners so it falls straight.

We had neighbors with a sliding door on an old outbuilding. It had provided many years of service with minimal maintenance. I always thought it was kind of cool. Certainly it wasn't weather tight but I don't think that was a consideration at the time. I have seen sliding hardware installed on some modern styled homes here in California. I am pretty sure they must offer a better seal than the old barn doors.

Have a look at the cool air door(inside slider) you lose a bit of wall space but might be ok.
