Hi All,

My knuckle head dog walked through the paint tray and tracked paint around my nice hardwood floors. Not a lot but enough. What do you recommend that I use to clean it off. I just had them refinished in July and was thinking of using goof off.

Thanks,

Mike

Before you do any kind of solvent, I'd take a piece of scrap (if you have any, but you said you refinished so it may not be the same finish) and douse it in the solvent to make sure it won't damage the finish. If you don't have scrap, test it in an inconspicuous place.

If it's just latex, I'd use a soft plastic scraper and some soapy water to gently take it off. If it's water based it should just wash off with some soapy water and a rag or mop. And if it's oil based, well, good luck.

Give the goof off a try in an inconspicuous area. I have used that stuff to clean up all kinds of messes.

I would be careful with Goof Off, have you tried some warm soapy water a Scotch Brite scouring pad and two cups of elbow grease?

I just noticed it this morning. It is latex/water based ceiling paint. I will try and use soap and water and light scrubbing.

Thanks,

Mike

don't be in a hurry to scrub it, wet it and keep it damp (the paint) and it should slough off pretty quickly. Then dry the wood as best you can. Scrubbing may just force the paint in to the grain making it tougher to actually remove.

Goof off is later IF this does not work...but use it sparingly.

+1 for damp rag and let it sit a while. Latex paint will soften up and there should not be much scrubbing.

You said you had the floors refinished, so I take that to mean you hired it done. That being the case, I would ask the guy who refinished the floors what he recommends.

When installing prefinished floors we would use goof off to remove glue all the time. Goof off shouldn't hurt the floor finish at all. Do not use an abrasive pad like someone suggested.

But, if this is just latex paint just use a damp wash rag and it should come right up, if not try your finger nail and see if that will take it off. It shouldn't be hard to get it off.
