Slim Jim Lockout Kits

Does anybody know what stores carry a good Slim Jim Lockout Kit?, I had a good one but it grew legs and walked away, so now I'm lookin to go buy a new slim jim.

I've never seen any in stores locally. You can get them online from a bunch of places. Steck makes some decent stuff. Each vehicle is different as to what's the best tool to use.

We get issued with a Slim Jim through work, modern car locking systems are so well shielded they are virtually useless on European cars, I use a stiff air wedge and long reach tools most of the time and a home made lasoo. For the dead locks we have to go technical and go for the wiring harness.

I went to a police outfitters store the other day to warrenty a streamlight and they stocked lock out kits.

When you say stores do you mean like Sears? In Cali only tow truck drivers and locksmiths (What I was told)can own break in tools. So I doubt that your going to find them at a store.

I got mine from one of the tool trucks which asked to remain annomous.

I bought a kit of about a dozen "things" from Tooltopia, slimjim won't touch any of my cars, don't know if its all newer cars or not. Last lock out we had was a rental in a snow storm, and the guy used a wedge and a little pump up pillow like a blood pressure cuff on the top rear corner of the driver door, then reached in with a LONG stick and poked the unlock button on the other door.

yes, the big easy is where its at. get the kit with the plastic wedge and inflate a bag. they make one that glows in the dark too.

and yes, being a body guy i'm inside alot of doors, pretty much anything made in the last ten yrs sux to slim jim. little plastic shields, cables instead of rods, you name it, they've figured out its easy to get slim jims and have engineered around them.

if its too hard to get one in your area, i've found steel banding like to hold stuff on pallets, can make a decent one with just a pair of tin snips. made a few back in the day for buddies that liked to borrow mine.

Being a body guy and a tow truck operator (I do a lot of lockouts) I will second both the Big Easy recomendation and the comment on slim jims being lousy on newer rigs. I will also add to be careful with air wedges, you can f*** up a door with one pretty quick. I have fixed quite a few doors that people have bent with air wedges.

I'm in Cali and I found one in the local 99 cent store of all places, which ironically enough was right next door to a real locksmith. Picked up 2 since the price was right.

i use a homemade rod, plastic felling wedges and an aircuff
ive had to improvise a few times; which is why i have a 36" straightedge in my truck right now.....just lucky i locked them in at lowes
i felt like a real *** the other day, i found a spare key hidden in the wheel well of my truck........been there for 5 or 6 years

Most of the tool truck companies list a lock out kit. You might check them if you cannot find elsewhere. These are not normally the kind of tool you see in hardware stores etc.

If I ever become a police officer again and get to retire. I am going to have someone sign saying if anything gets damaged, myself and the department is not responsible. Then I am going to take my baton and smash out the window, reach in, unlock door, and say have a good night. Then head back to the office, hang my belt, say thanks to the Chief, and walk out!

Agreed, buy the kit, you won't be disappointed. I've used mine dozens of times and it worked slick as a whistle.

Be sure to buy the one with the air wedge.
