I just finished the install today. This thing has two squirrel cages and easily cools my 1000 sq ft shop on low speed. I need to finish it above and below the inside panel.
We had a swamp cooler when I was a kid . Gotta say I liked the neighbors a.c much gooder at that time. How do you compare it to a.c these days? Your dry climate probably needs alittle humidity so I can understand that part but ours just didn't seem to cool very good but the weather got pretty humid so it wasnt the best choice for our situation.
I got it at Grainger's. Unfortunately they stopped making it though. The company, Adobe Air (Mastercool) in Phoenix, went out of business. Another company bought the Mastercool name, keeping none of their products. If we keep this weather, you won't need one anyway...
I was at Northern Tool yesterday and they had three different models of swamp coolers sitting in the doorway. You might check their online catalog for something similar.
I have an evaporitive cooler on casters in my shop and I hook up a 1/4" plastic water line to it. It has done a great job for 6 years now. I leave a window behind it open under a shade tree and open one of the roll up door about 4 to 6 inches and it does ok even though our humidity is 42% and it is 94 degrees today. I also have the metal building wrapped in pink panther insulation. However, I do keep my water and beverages in a fridge.
I can't hardly believe that my post of june 2010 and a reply to it in 2010 is just getting into my email box today! Brett did yiy get a cooler yet? I am still using the evaporative cooler on castors in my shop.
