Sling for cherry picker.

Hey guys. I need a sling that hooks into the crane of the cherry picker.

I am assembling a 4 post lift and the runway is 18.5" wide. 4.5" high.
36" seems a bit too short to me to wrap it. I also need to flip it around while holding it.

I was looking at axle straps etc. I wasn't sure what I was going to need.
Prefer not to use ratchet straps on a live load.

If you see something I can use on Amazon or home depot please let me know

Tuflex roundsling would be my choice. You can probably get by with the purple ones (lowest load rating but still in the 2000 lb range depending on use).

McMaster Carr sells them but it doesn't come up on web-hits I don't think.

You want a lifting sling? Something with eye ends that can slip over the lifting hook? Would 6' long $10 sling with a 2,480lb choker capacity work? There are lots of lifting slings available on Amazon, so maybe I'm misinterpreting what you need.

That will work.. but do you think I can stuff both 2" strap ends onto the hook of the hoist, Or would do I need to run another chain into the strap loops?

You can probably just pick some up at HF for this. But if you want something good (not sure if that's really necessary) you can visit a rigging website. You can get just about any length you need. They are not expensive.. I prefer the endless style slings myself, but it really doesn't matter much. Just look at the load ratings for the different lifting configurations.

Yes. I will try to do a double strap like the picture on the right.
I also have a load balancer. Do you think I should use that? But the ends on that are L brackets and I probably need a D ring to attach to the chain on it.
All in all the ram side of runway is around 500 so it's not overloading the chain or slings

You could buy a shackle to make it easier to hook up. Put both loops through the shackle, then use the hook to grab the pin of the shackle, if the hook is not big enough to grab the shackle, the pin should still fit through. That also makes it so the strap can't fall off if you are not paying attention. The kind of weight you are lifting is not going to get you in trouble by using cheaper gear.

If it were me, I would buy two cheap 6' slings, choke them around the load, and spread them out a ways. I would also use electrical tape around the choked straps and the load to help keep the straps from sliding into the middle, it doesn't take much as long as the load is fairly balanced. You may need to experiment a bit, but seems like you can get more than enough help from GJ members.

I'm not exactly sure what your lifting, but it this is just a piece of square tube for a crossmember on a lift or something, you could be over thinking this.. we move 45' long telephone poles around with one sling. If you going to keep whatever your lifting somewhat level, and it's basically a symmetrical shape - just find the balance point with the sling and lift. A 45', 2000lb telephone pole can be swung around with a finger if you take a minute to balance it... as long as someone is on the ground and can keep a hand on it, it's fine.. with a balanced load you're only moving a few pounds around with get it to swing around or tip up or down a bit..

So long as your not going higher than you can reach with a small step ladder, one person with a hand on the load is more than enough to control it, if it's balanced and basically level.

Why do you need to flip it while holding it? It would be best to choke it so the eye of the chocker is at one side (centre of the 4.5") and slowly pick it up so it stands on edge, then lower it so it is right way up. Best to have it on some 6" X 6" timbers so you don't scratch the floor etc. for this.

If you can do this it will be a straight lift. 2 slings equal spread from the centre balance point will make it really stable but a single sling with a guy on the end would work too.

How big a lift is this? How much does the runway weigh about in total?

It's going to be a single sling non chock. But will get the wife to help.

You are probably right. I was mostly concerned about it sliding off the sling but with the diamond treads probably not that easy. I have various portable work benches I can slide under as soon as it is high enough.

I have several pairs of the 6 foot lifting straps from HF. use them a lot. you can get shackles from tractor supply. use them with my engine hoist.

2oolhound has indicated the correct way to flip the piece. I also wouldn't hesitate to use a heavy c-clamp to rig from. However, I'd bet two men could accomplish the same feat by hand. Also, please never basket a piece like that, always choke it! All you have to do is mark the c-of-g, rig it there, and it'll pick relatively level.

The 2" sling is too thick to go to the hook. This is what I had to do to loop a small chain over the webbing. The small chain is rated 1300lbs 1/4" chain thickness. But my shackle was a stainless and it's only rated 800. I think I need a better shackle.
The runway is only 500 lbs on the ram side but I may need to lift the package with both to put dolly under. Which would be close to 1000 lbs

On I can't get the boom to come out to the 1/2 ton. It's jammed and not sure what to do yet
