slodat’s fabrication and upholstery projects

I thought I’d start a thread on the stuff I make in and for my shop similar to what others have on here. I have a custom auto upholstery shop with some fun tools.

Some recent shop photos:

Since these photos were taken the sofa was moved to make room for a large digitizing tablet.

Thanks for checking my projects out!

Nice place!

Thank you!! It has been a journey getting the shop to this stage.

What are the white pieces hanging on the wall in this pic? Well organized whatever they are!

They are router templates, used to make shapes, rather quickly.

This is from a post in my shop thread that shows one way I use them..

When I built this wall, I routed two channels to run EMT through, in the wall making it all pretty. I have a bunch of 4" square boxes I have to locate (accurately or it will drive me nuts every time I see them) in the plywood. I thought I'd show how I did it.

First, chipboard templates of the box/cover plate..

These are glued and/or stapled to more chipboard working toward the reference surfaces-adjacent plywood and wall. Repeat until all obstacles are located.

Transfer chipboard template to something to make the actual template out of. In this case 12mm plywood scrap o had sitting around.

Next using templates and a flush trim router bit in a router lift, cut the holes in the template. This makes those pencil lines nice and crisp and rounds the corners.

Repeat for each line to cut. It fits perfectly.

This is then used to cut openings in the 4x8 sheet that goes on the wall.

That is a lot of shop devoted to interiors
Congrats!

There's a lot going on in a nice interior!

What is the "Evol Stik 6" router guide system?

They are acrylic router templates, used with flush trim router bit to create shape. The verbiage on that sticker is the creators naming system. That particular template is a 6" long straight section.

Armrest final part for the full custom interior project I’m working on. I try to use the right material for a given part. In this case the base is acrylic, the pad is expanded PVC.

CAD drawing of the many layers in this part:

Off the cnc router:

The acrylic base layers are bonded with an acrylic adhesive that fuses them together. Then the top is screwed to the base for edge work and profiling on the router table. No longer a square block:

There’s a removable panel on the underside that hides the screws that hold it together and attach to the mounting bracket. It gets machined at the same time.

The final part ready for foam on the pad and some more machine work to compensate for material thickness prior to covering.
