Sloppy socket fit on 1/4" drive ratchet?

I bought a used Snap On 1/4" drive ratchet; it's in good, used shape. I went to use it with some Craftsman sockets I had but the sockets are rather loose on the ratchet. I'm thinking it's probably because the sockets are cheap, but I'm wondering if this is a common problem.

The sockets seem to have about an eight degree wiggle from side to side (didn't measure, just estimating). The wiggle makes it difficult when loosening small bolts as the socket and the ratchet have to be kept in alignment.

I've used Snap On sockets with Snap On ratchets before and haven't noticed this problem. Maybe this is one of the differences between a cheap socket set and a good quality USA made professional set? Or should the ratchets be paired with the same brand of sockets?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Do you have any other sockets to test with, or other ratchets to test the sockets you've got?

My Craftsman sockets don't have that issue on my Snap-on ratchets, or any others for that matter.

Just curious if the ratchet is the culprit, or if it's the sockets.

how old are the sockets? the ones from the 50's and 60's tend to be sloppier. at least mine are. they may be worn. never had a problem with newer craftsman sockets fitting any of my ratchets...

I've had no problems with loose fitment on Wright, Armstrong, Gearwrench, SK, and Husky.

So take a set of calipers and measure the anvil on the Snap On and see how it compares to your other ratchets.

Craftsman 1/4" sockets are notoriously sloppy. Like a designed in wobble.

Feel lucky! Some people pay a lot of money for wobble wrenches!
