Slotted screwdrivers

I have a habit of buying 6pc screwdriver sets b/c it's a better value than finding individual drivers and paying for shipping.

e.g. $8 and $9 for 2 Phillips drivers plus maybe $8 shipping, vs. $30 for 6pc set.

Bad news is that I rarely use slotted drivers.




Anyone else have the same problem?

It is somewhat of a crappy dilemma, considering not many things utilize slotted screws anymore, at least stuff that I work on. So yup, got the same problem as you.

Some brands of straight slot screwdrivers vary on tip thickness. For example: a Snap-On 5/16" wide blade will be .046" thick while its MAC counterpart will be .042" thick. Believe it or not, I've ran into a few straight slot screws where the Snap-On .046" thick tip was too thick to fit in the slot, but the MAC .042" tip was perfect.

Some slotted screws are very nice; namely the Fillister head slotted screws. The Fillister head has an extra deep slot for giving the screwdriver blade more meat to hold onto. Carburetor screws are usually Fillister head and they're very nice.

I suppose you can use them as prybars or paint stir sticks.

Leading to keeping track of the "different" sizes, (thickness) and grind the dupes to a perfect fit for when you need a slightly different blade thickness or width...

I like having spares though, I got into the habit when doing the race car thing, and we were always using Dzus fasteners for the body panels and hoods, and everyone on the crew had one in a back pocket...

I do woodworking and come across slotted screws all the time, especially on piano hinges... these screw are often made out of soft brass and not having the right size screwdriver results in tearing up the heads pretty good.

Maybe next month after my move I'll count them all and put non-essentials into storage.

If I ever get all my screwdrivers in one place, it'll sure be a frightening site.
