Things are slow this morning

The GJ is responding slowly this morning and I'm getting bounced back to the main page once in a while. Photos are slow to load and sometimes just don't. I have a VERY fast connection and have no problems with other sites.

Should I oil my wifi router? :bounce:

Me too.

I just gave it a shot of hi-test.

A virus could have turned your machine into a zombie server too. Had that happen once from looking at too many **** sites. Computer was stuffed with popular software, music and video file pieces.

Your router just needs a couple cups of coffee.

Is the site running really slow for everyone else today? All the other sites I go to are running normally, but this one takes forever to load the forums and threads.

I ran a complete scan, found nothing but eliminated 28 tracking cookies. Made no difference in performance. The problem is only with GJ. Tried 2 different laptops, same results. Unusual for me as I usually have very good response.

It was running slower earlier this morning when I was on trying to boot a spammer. I was on my laptop and I just bought a new WiFi router and was concerned it was the issue.

...moving to FP.

I might add that in the last couple of days, I have had some issues with double posts appearing and having to delete the 2nd post.

I'd guess there might be a glitch in the matrix and Ryan switched to a back up server in order to tend to the problem.

From here it looks like both a traffic issue from the Cogent (Tier 1 internet service provider) and possibly something on the host servers. Traffic to garagejournal.com IP is quick until it hits Cogent's network, then the route to the destination is a little slow.

"Ryan switched to a back up server in order to tend to the problem."
I doubt he has any of that capability unless he runs his own data center.

A lot of hosting providers have geographically redundant data centers and some even let you pick which one you're in or migrate hosts between them. Having a backup server with a replicated database isn't too tricky to do with the right IT knowledge either.

Lol. We have 3 fully redundant locations and substantial multiple redundancy at two of those locations, and there is certainly no need to have our own data centers to do so!

Pretty simple with dedicated servers, cloud hosting, EC2, application hosting, and whatever else is popular these days.

Depends on the host, entirely. You can take on as much as you'd like as an admin - managing your own server(s) is a PITA for people with other things to do. GJ looks to be hosted at admo.net in Kansas City, apparently.

Cogent is one of their Tier 1 uplinks. You don't get to pick the route you take to GJ, you don't have any control over it. It might be 5 hops, it might be 15 hops. It happens to be 12 hops (routers) away from here, via one of our two uplinks. My routers pick the path, so it could be either one - Cogent or AT&T. Someone over there hits the site through Level 3 and sees no delay, if you are routed through Cogent's network and they have an issue between you and the endpoint, you will experience delays. That's the internet.

And not everyone has redundant data centers - ours lasts 38 minutes. Shut it down on Saturday during an extended outage at AEP.

Yup, definitely depends on the host and I didn't go look up anything on what GJ's host has. My comment was more towards your last quote and point around running his own data center in that a lot of hosts do offer geographically redundant hosting solutions today, some completely transparent, some with your own ability to manage them. Some of the work I do we use Azure hosting so that we can pick data centers that are geographically close to our customer sites to minimize both latency and interruptions in service and I'm sure you know that it has other capabilities around load balancing and migration.

Sorry but my answer was just painted with a wide brush and some generalization. We have had an upswing in some spammers again, the issues I have noticed in the last few days with slow site speed and double posts.

Who knows?
Same issues for me as well. Everywhere else on the 'net works just fine. The GJ is so slow that I'm cruising other sites while waiting for it to load. Seems to take about 18 seconds between pages/screens on here.
