Hello,

New to the forum, loving all the great ideas ive been seeing here. I thought it would be a great idea to create a progress thread, as well as get some advice.
Recently purchased a townhouse, with unfortunately a very small garage. The floor measures 20'6" by 10'3" . The garage will be used to store my car and get some small projects done, not an intensive workshop by any means. The plan is to be conservative on $ spent, but im not trying to get this done for pennies either.

Flooring: I was initially thinking of doing epoxy, but the prep work, time and money just didn't make it seem like it was worth it for such a small space. I then started looking into plastic flooring, and while visiting the Weathertech factory store they had some yellow flooring on clearance for only $1/sqft. I know the color is not ideal and will get dirty quickly, but i ended up picking it up. I mostly want to keep the dust low and covering the concrete floor with it should work. If anyone wants to convince me to go a different route, youre more than welcome to.

Also, should i seal the small 1/8" gaps around the floor where it meets the wall or leave them as is and dont worry if any water gets in there during winter (Im in Chicago, so it gets cold)? Should i run some vinyl baseboard to cover it? Any input on this would be appreciated. (see pics below)

Storage:
Picked this up during 4th of July sale at menards for $169 36"x18"x72"

Also this shelving unit for $50 48"x24"x72"

My current Craftsman tool box measure 27" wide and 18" deep so that should fill up the back wall nicely leaving some room to store the jack or other small items.

Or i could ditch the shelves i bought and build custom storage unit from 2x4s and keep the locker cabinet.

The rest of the wall space will be covered in pegboard to hang miscellaneous items, and also plywood to hang heavier things or build custom holders for some tools.

For the workbench, ive decided to make a foldown bench since im very limited on the floor space. Something like this (not my work, link to the build pics can be found here:http://imgur.com/a/TWOuc :

Ill make some custom holders hanging from the ceiling to hold wood pieces and long stock.

Current stage:

while it is easy, get the things that should not be stored in the garage out, and establish that rule. it is easy for stuff to accumulate if you aren't paying attention, and it gets harder to get rid of it.

as for the fold down bench, they are great in avoiding things accumulating, but bad for working on long term projects, especially if they need to be folded up to get the car in, which may be important in the winter.

good luck. take it slow, and dont be afraid to move things around looking for the correct placement.

Geeez, you stole the flooring, good deal ! I'm a fan of yellow, so start a theme and go with it. The only down sides of plastic floors usually are the hollow noise it makes when walked on (see the threads here for putting down landscape fabric to take care of that) and it can't take welding and grinding sparks, which it doesn't sound like you are going to be doing. Start putting it down and sharing pictures ! The yellow doesn't seem to be on the web site any longer, so I can't see the actual color, but the 1/8 gap sounds perfect for expansion. I would probably do a baseboard to cover the gap and paint it to break up the kind of loud color on the floor. Gray walls would be the opposite of the "theme" I have ended up with, and I am pretty happy with it.

Oh, the wheels look nice, what's the car ?

Great canvas to start with. Something about being creative with the smaller spaces. cannot wait to see how you progress.
