I'm looking for a small air compressor to fill up my personal vehicles' tires as its primary use. Not to take with me on trips, but simply keep in the garage to ensure the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. What would be the best choice with a budget of $100?

I have an old compressor my stepfather gave me. It's tankless, with a regulator that just pressurizes the hose. Might be worth considering something like that just for tires. It beats having to wait for a tank to fill, so it can then fill a tire instead. It's a bit smaller too, but I'm not even sure you can find something like that anymore.

The HF compressors do have a big following though. The 8 or 10 gallon 2 stage central pneumatic, also sold under the Husky label in HD are pretty nice. Friend of mine has one, and loves it. I'd buy the same for myself if I didn't already have 3 now.

Here's the HF

Looks like hd changed to a different model now online, but they probably still have the model posted above in the store. But the models I'm speaking of do have oil you can service. They are quieter and a bit quicker.

And here's another smaller model from hd

I see the lineup at a local Belle Tire every morning-people filling their tires with the "free" air, and I wonder why they just don't go to HF and get one of the cheap pancake compressors? I have a small Craftsman one by the garage door, with a HF hose reel, just for filling tires-so much more convenient than firing up the big 60 gallon one in the back of the garage.

None of those small compressors are 2 stage. The only 2 stage HF sells is the 5hp/60 gallon. Even there, they had two models for a while and the three cylinder one was incorrectly advertised as a 2 stage.

If you can lay hands on an old Black and Decker 9527 Air Station, grab it. It is the size of a big brick and just as heavy. There are none on ebay at the moment Check your local CL. It is 120Volt AC. Do NOT confuse this with the orange, dual voltage piece of junk they are currently selling. I have had mine for years and done countless tires and just used it to pressurize a well water tank I think they go for around 20-25 bucks.
