For small angle grinders (4.5” though 6”), do you prefer the grinding wheels and flap discs with 7/8” non-threaded or 5/8-11 threaded? Obviously the latter would cost more but do you notice any big difference in vibration between those two?

If at all possible I get the non-threaded type.

The threaded type attachments can be a real SOB to get off the spindle sometimes... especially if it has been on for awhile.

Never had a real big issue with vibrations from attachments unless they've suffered some sort of catastrophic damage, in which case I throw them away.

I find a lot of the threaded ones push the wheel out to the edge of the guard rather than nicely centered. I avoid them these days.

I agree with the comments about grinding wheels but not with the flap disc comments. I have NEVER seen a flap disc come apart so I don't use a guard with a flap disc as I feel it's unnecessary and counter-productive. I certainly do with any kind of grinding wheel. The reason to use a flap disc is normally to flatten (smooth) a weld. With the non-threaded flap discs the arbor of the grinder extends beyond the plane of the abrasive surface of the flap disc meaning that you have to hold the grinder at an acute angle and therefore only use the very edge of the flap disc. That ***** as it gauges the metal. If I have 1 inch of flaps on my flap disc I want to use all of this to grind something flat. With the threaded flap discs the arbor of the grinder is recessed below the abrasive surface and enables the flap disc to be used this way. Another option is to use the jumbo flap discs (the double thick ones) as their thickness accomplishes the same purpose of recessing the spindle of the grinder so that the flap disc can be used flat.

I use the open hole ones. Reason being that I don't misplace the nut or spacer that way. Plus the open hole ones are cheaper.

The only angle grinder attachments I use with threaded connections are cup wire wheels and thick (cup) stones. Everything else I use the regular non threaded 7/8" arbor hole. It's usually cheaper that way.

The threaded attachments on grinding wheels appear in many cases to be some sort of zinc pot metal, and zinc alloys are known for galling and being “sticky”.

Also, if a zinc alloy, the alloy will become weaker over time.

On the plus side, maybe the zinc arbor will help prevent corrosion on steel parts on the grinder.
