I am in need of a small dust collector for my CNC using a Dewalt trim router. Space and budget are concerns of course.

No chips, just dust and not a lot of it

The cyclones are usually for separating chips from dust.

Things to look for in a dust collector is how easy to change the bag, and airflow. There are some small wall mounted unit available, but I don’t know the quality. I have a Jet DC1100, but they’ve gotten out of the small side.

A shop vac will be better than nothing, but will miss a ton of stuff.

Harbor Freight and grizzly both sell inexpensive dust collectors. Add a real filter and you have something pretty decent

I had a Shopbot CNC similar to what you described.

Our dust collection system used the smaller HF dust collector that we wall mounted w/ a cyclone (take your pick, DustDeputy is a proven performer), upgraded filter and appropriate diameter hard and flex tubing.

Worked well enough for the low entry cost.

I think your biggest concern after installing a DC is the shroud around the router bit, that is where you will loose the most performance. Lots of DIY solutions, some store bought as well.

Good luck.

PS the big gains of the cyclone are minimal bag changes, a definite advantage when milling out lots of material like CNC tend to do.
