Hey guys!

First to start off, I do not speak the language of electricity!

I do however really enjoy old electric motors, running belt driven grinders, sanders, wire wheels, drill presses, and the like. I have a few floating around that came to me without a plug end or cable, that I would like set up.

I'd like some guidance on a few so that I feel comfortable in the future. To me, this little 115v ge 1/6hp seems like a good intro. Attached is the spec label.

I would like very much appreciate someone to walk me through the process of understanding this set up, and the wiring of the cable and plug.

I have 8' of viper sjoow 14/3 300v wiring, and a Leviton 15a 125 volt grounding plug that I was going to save for a tri-clad motor, but I think it's better suited for this little guy.

Any advise, would just be great guys! The pictures are as clear as I can get for some reason, so let me know if you need clarification.

Looks like plug wires/Line go too 1 and 4. Hard too see clearly or upside down. Wire box should be numbered by the screws. Ground to ground screw or just use the screw for cover.

Couldn't really tell if you can reverse direction, pic only blew up so big and was a bit blurry reading the plate.

Anyhow, your plug wires will be LINE and wire the plug end as normal.

Jersey-thanks a lot. I altered the photos and they seem clearer now. Take another look. To me the motor looks set up for thermal protection blue wire to 2, yellow to 4. So all I have to do is connect to 1 and 4 to the cable and plug? What would be the ground screw?

Yep, You got it.
Ground screw would be green off to the side somewhere, if not you could use the screw for the cover.
Looks like it may be on bottom left in the pic, but hard to tell. If there's no green screw just use the cover screw.

Swap blue t1 and yellow t4 if want want to change rotation.

Great, seems to easy.

So 1 is hot, 4 is neutral? In the future, how do I know which is intended to be hot/neutral?

Also, The 1 screw has no wires running to it. I guess I'm just not understanding how it all works.

Your plug wire goes on 1 lol
Motor has internal windings... Your just supplying power to it

Shouldn't matter which is hot but I usually use the top or 1st number as hot.

Put the black plug wire on 1,white on 4 and plug it in.

Might be good idea to have something handy to catch the "magic smoke", lol nah, I'm just kidding.

Ok thanks jersey. I would be lieing if I said I knew a thing about electricity/electrical. I don't how that is, but that's what it is. You saying that it doesn't matter which line I plug the hot into is odd to me, but should show you how little I really understand any of it. Thank you for walking me through it, and I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Go on and explain the magic smoke. I have some good mason jars handy...

I believe it should be line 1 for hot, that said I have reversed them for shits and giggles and they worked.
Installing them I place hot on line 1 and neutral on line 2 or 4 in your case...

I guess there's a reason as to why but I don't know it???

Magic smoke*@#$(also*@#$factory smoke,*@#$blue smoke, or*@#$the genie) is a humorous name for the caustic smoke produced by burning out electronic circuits or components, usually by overheating, overvolting, or connecting them incorrectly. The smoke typically smells of burning plastic and other chemicals, and sometimes contains specks of sticky black ash. The color of the smoke depends on which component is overheating.

The name is a*@#$running*@#$in-joke*@#$that started among*@#$electrical engineers*@#$and*@#$technicians. It was more recently adopted by computerprogrammers. The device was operating until the smoke was released from it, at which point the device ceases to operate. Ergo, the smoke is an essential part of the device's operation, through undetermined ('magical') means.[1]*@#$The joke's humor operates via the logical consistency of what is observed, versus knowledge of what is actually occurring

Ok gotcha. I've experienced the genie smoke coming from a trolling motor in the middle of a lake. One of my 3 wishes, was for the fire to stop...which it did. I still have 2 wishes.

Hooked up the motor, and it didn't exactly run smoothly. Kinda pulsed along if that makes sense. Hard clicking when starting and stopping. Eh. Still a fun learning experience, and no magic smoke!

Try moving blue wire to terminal 2 and see if it runs smoother?
Is there a capacitor on this motor?
Is breaker enough to handle the amperage?

Was it struggling to run? What do you mean pulsed along?

X2. Ground wire can go to any screw on the motor chassis as long as it's NOT one of the motor winding terminals. That motor is not reversible. It is thermally protected. I may be wrong, but I recall if it was not thermally protected it would have to be controlled by a starter with overload protection.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Well the manufacture fucked up the plate then lol
Hard to read but it does explain how to reverse rotation.
Also, it can be wired either way.... Thermal protected or not.

Not sure what that means, just going by the info on plate and wiring diagram.

Well it runs at rpm for like 3 seconds, then drops down a little in rpm for 1 second, Then good for 3, then drops, and so on...

Just doesn't hum along steady like my others.

Breaker is fine. Capacitor? Eh I dunno
