Small engine power options

Hey guys.

I am having trouble finding info on what options i have.
Looking for a "small" engine. (no V8's please.)

Will be going in a project that came with an 18h JLO engine.

Needs:

Horozontal Shaft output with clutch belt drive.
Must be a reasonable size.
nothing over 200lbs.



2 or 4 stroke. dont care.

looking for size, weight, power, ext.
A link would be a huge help.

I hope that there is like a 35-45hp engine that will work.

I would think you might have to go 2-stroke to get that kind of power in a "small" package. You might see what Rotax has to offer.

What type vehicle or equipment is this going in? That would help some of the members make an appropriate reccomendation.

Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 34hp L/C 3cyl 159 lbs. They also have a 34hp turbo-diesel model!

Or the simplier air-cooled v-twin version: "Big Block" 35hp Vanguard Only 125 lbs.

OK, a quick Google says a "18h JLO engine" is an old small engine used a lot in snowmobiles.

So, I'll stand with my 35hp Big Block Briggs Vanguard rec, and the A/C version to make it smaller and simplier. Awesome engines.

Another vote for the Briggs Vanguards!!

I have a lightly modded 23HP Vanny in an EZGO golf cart.. It has a performance cam, rev-kit, and header.. It puts out nearly 30HP and can be buzzed to nearly 6000 RPM... The cart has a set of 8:1 hi-speed gears and will nearly hit 40MPH at WOT.. The V-Twin Vanny has no problems pulling the front tires off the ground from a dead stop with two passengers in the seat..

An R1 engine ought to do the trick.

It is under 200lbs but might have a hundred or so too many ponies.

hey guys application is for an AMF surtrek. It is a 70's amphibious atv. Engine goes in the back car and drives a transmission which turns a chain drive system.

I like the R1 idea but i think i would be un manageable to drive and I would prob not be able to use the machine. I was thinking about maybe an old snow mobile engine.
(aircooled would be prefered but not required) how much power do the old snow mobile motors make and what do they rev up to? i found a 440 but i dont want to buy something that is not going to be bigger than what i have.

How about an R6...My 2003 has 120 HP at the crank per the factory specs...

Could be a lot of fun.

If I understand this correctly you need to power a cvt clutch.

One option would be a 3cyl geo metro motor with a machined hub bolted to the flywheel to fit a clutch. Good for 55HP an 6000rpm

I remember a show on one of those or something very similar. The guy used a Rotax [sp] snowmobile engine. He also had to upgrade the weak chain due to the increased power output. I think the show was called Gears.
