Have a 21" Snapper self propelled walk behind with a 5hp B&S engine that is fine starting but dies unless the prime bulb is repeatedly pumped to keep it going.

I did a Google but the two sites I found were both antiquated with one being locked down to only archived threads or a newer site with closed registration. GJ search turned up a bunch of similar requests but little direction.

Just looking at how to address a mower problem on a good site with knowledgable folks a'la GJ for tools and garages but for small engine and carb issues.

TIA and sorry if I did indeed miss a thread somewhere.

My mower with a tecumse motor had the same issue. I took the carb apart there was junk in the main jet clogging it up. I had to clean it with air and torch tip cleaner.

Not sure how much you are priming prior to starting but if you only are doing one or two pumps try doing a good 7-10 pumps first and see how it runs. I've seen a few occasions where the bowl is dry and the only fuel it gets is from the primer b/c it doesn't get enough of a vacuum to draw from the tank.

If that doesn't work pull the carb and clean thoroughly, pull the exhaust and make sure the screen isn't plugged too and try all over.

Buy a gallon of carb cleaner from napa.. take it off and let it soak in there. Should take care of the problem

Priming is fine and mower will start and run , but dies if the primer bulb is not continously pushed lately.

Everything worked fine last week but the fuel deliverly problem has been a touchy on and off thing since the spring. It's getting spark and air but just no fuel unless forced in there via the primer bulb. Dead man's handle is fine and it did run just fine except I was getting a wee little bit of backfire when I shut it off lately until it stopped running due to the above yesterday. Hmmm.

My guess is float or needle but most of my expereince is with automobles, especially carb work, so I'm not a small engine/lawn equip. guy. Pulling the carb is not an issue, I just don;t want springs and parts flying all around the workshop once I pull it and tear it down. :)

Sounds like some wrenching in order. :)

Sounds like the diaphragm is bad.

Had the same thing happen on my B&S 5hp last year.

Should be pretty easy to remove/replace. Just make sure the diaphragm doesn't tear when you're screwing the carb back on.

OccupantRJ, I'll crack the cap and see if it runs as a locked gas cap would certainly prevent the vacuum draw and cause the current stall-out.

Thanks ADaughen.
Is the diaphram a seviceable part?
I have an older style B&S 5hp Quantum and didn't see it listed on any of the parts suppliers I searched thru.
Mine:

Model Type Code
124702 3106-01-9205185

Sorry I didn't have time to check this this past weekend.

Yes, it is usually a serviceable part. I didn't see it for your model, however. This is like what I had to replace:

There is an idle mixture needle (valve needle http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Valve-Needle/493765/1641477?modelNumber=124702/3106-01 ) may need cleaned/adjusted.

But I will leave that to those familiar with that model. I only know my small engines because that's what I have had to work on so far.

www.perr.com is a good one. Some really knowledgable people over there and a bunch that are small engine mechanics that will answer your question and know all the common problems.
