I use the quotations because I'm really looking for a cabin and not a garage, but figured a garage is just four walls and a roof to begin with so there might be some members here who can help me. I'm wanting to build or have built a small building that I can convert into a hunting cabin. I'm looking at something about 350sq ft, so like a 16x20 building or something along those lines. I have ZERO carpentry experience from a building standpoint. I can finish the inside myself, but walls, doors, windows, trusses, rafters, roofing, siding, etc are all things I have zero knowledge of so I'd like to find someone who would be willing to build the "shell" so to speak and I'd take over the rest.
My first question is what should I expect to pay for something like that? I can't get any carpenters in my area to give me any estimates. They all say they will call me back and they never do. I'm talking just a basic building of about 320 to 350 sq ft. Just a few contractor grade windows, one cheap walk-in door, no porch, nothing fancy. I have electric on-site and also a well.
My neighbor recommended that I look into a shipping container for my "shell" and then I could finish the inside however I wanted. Aside from being long and skinny, a 40x8 shipping container with 9ft ceiling would cost $2160 delivered to my site. I know if would take a lot more work to finish out than an actual stick-built building, but would this be more cost effective? I would like to do this as cheaply as possible since it would only be used for a hunting cabin. I've also looked at the pre-fab storage buildings that people are converting to cabins and they are around $10,000, which seems to me to be really expensive. I had a 30x36 metal building built on a concrete slab about 3 years ago for $20,000.
