Hi ! I'm Xavier, I just turned 23 and that's my first house with my girlfreind.

The garage have 11'6" x 23'. I installed a belt driven motor and I built my first workbench ever! I just took woodsheets (you can see one on the right) and 2x6 from the garbage of other construction sites.

Now I would like to build shelves to put the tires over the workbench but I don't know how to start. I need your help !

Have a nice day ! :p

Nice work so far.

You need to search the website thoroughly for photos, BUT in short, if you're not storing many tires you need a "ladder frame" made of 2x4's lag bolted to the wall studs and supported from above with struts. You can make the struts of lumber fastened to the ceiling joists or rafters, OR you could suport the ladder frame from below with "knee braces" or kickers as they are sometimes called back to the wall. Its basically just like making a shelf except you don't sheath the ladder frame with plywood, you leave the frame open to accept the curvature of the tires. Does any of this make sense?

PS: Kudos to you for wanting to do this and asking for advice at only 23.

So? What do you think? The braces are not defenitive.

But coming to think about it i think I'm gonna make another shelf over the sink

But I think I will support it from the roof instead of the floor.

And on the right I will put my toolbox so I will continue the shelf on this side after I got the toolbox in place.

With how narrow your garage is, I'd probably extend the shelf all the way across it. I had just assumed you intended to put the tires on their tread, NOT stacked but that does work and take up less space. I agree that moving the struts up to the ceiling will be much less intrusive. Make sure to keep posting photos!

I put up a small shelf similar to what you are suggesting for a buddy of mine. We ran the shelf all the way across (supported on the sides and back) and then put eye bolts in the ceiling joists and ran down some metal cable for center/front support. Gave a nice industrial look and worked well.

I got some difficulties finding the studs in the celling. I think there is 24" between them but not sure, but tonight maybe I'm gonna finish the shelf on the left. On the right I'm gonna extend it too, but I want to be sure that my toolbox will fit.

I'm looking to build some "cabinets" just under the shelf with nice doors too. :)

Hey hey hey ! :rocker:

I worked a little bit on the garage project. I finish hanging up the shelves on the ceiling joists. That's really strong :eyecrazy:

I build the shelve over the sink too. Now I'm going to pick up my toolbox so after that I will see if I can put another shelf on the right side.

Stay tuned !

Hey guys !

I finnaly go pick up my tools at my mom's house. :shocking: Takes a lot of place in the garage but at least I'm gonna be able to play with my engine :willy_nil

I added my two spots under the shelf. I think that maybe 12 tires with rims is a bit too heavy for my setup... What do you think about it ?

And yes : There is no more space left for a car :wtf: But maybe it's gonna be a performance engine shop for the rest of it's life ? :pimpflash

I am a bit concerned about the weight too. I can't tell from your pictures. Did you screw or did you nail the supports into the ceiling? If everything is screwed, and the screws are at least 3 1/2 inches long (4 or 4 1/2 better) you are probably ok. Lag screws would be best. Then you may also want to consider bolting the vertical pieces into the shelves. Good work. I'm sure, like your engines, you will be tearing this apart and rebuilding it better as you get more ideas and experience.

Have you thought about installing the ceiling shelf that you have already installed on the whole back end of the garage? You might have room for most of your stuff (you could use rubbermaid containers)
If you put your toolboxes at the very back of your garage and made a fold up workbench along the wall you might still have room for your car if you needed. At least for the winter when you probably wouldn't work in the garage much anyways.

Nice to see a fellow member from Quebec ! Keep posting pictures as you go, it's nice to see some standard small garages being exploited as much as possible...

As for the shelves, I hope you did screwed everything, as it looks like a bit heavy for the design you got there... and like FordF1 said, I think it would be great to have the whole back end of the garage done with your celling shelf. Then you could have both toolboxes on that wall too.

What's the motor on the engine stand ?
