Small Garage Under Construction

Well I wanted to build myself a small garage that I can keep my Motorcycle and jet ski in, and get them out of the main garage as it is pretty full.

So my intentions was to build a 16x16 until the city shut me down and said I am over in my sq footage to the size I was allowed on my lot, they have this weird house size x lot size = allowable size for a stand alone auxiliary building hence the allowable size 14x16.

So jumping the gun before I got my city building permit I formed and set rebar at 16x16 only to get my pee pee slapped from the city and had to reduce the size.

So I thought this could make for some good entertainment as I move forward so if anyone is wanting to come along for the ride feel free, this could be fun.
Am by no means a handy man this is all built on internet reading and advice from friends, so that should make it that little bit more interesting.

So fingers crossed tomorrow I get a foundation inspection, if all goes well with that, I pour concrete on the weekend.

Passed inspection excited to get the concrete down I pushed ahead for a delivery after work, of course does not rain all day until the truck arrives then starts to pour. I took on a little more than I thought I ended up burning midnight oil to get it done.

Got home from work today and managed to get a wall up should get most of the frame work done over the weekend.

Got an early start this morning goal was to get four walls up.


You will notice I have framed the door 7' that is a city thing, I cant go any wider than that, but I will, when I get my final inspection I will be redoing the front to accommodate a 10' door stupid I know but this city does have some crazy rules.

If you are going to do a wider door later put in a header big enough now. It'll be much easier then doing it later.

I'd have the header span the entire front wall. If the city questions why you did it that way, tell them it's for extra strength.

I did think of that, but I thought it's best to do it after, the building inspectors are quite ****, so am sure there would be a hundred and one questions on why I did that. So to avoid all the BS I just done it the way they want to see it.

So after sleeping on it I took the advice from mikefromme and gut feeling to change the header over now rather than later, I just hope this does not cause a problem when I call for my framing inspection from the city. Put me back a little today was hoping to get the roof on but, only got some done as I was tired and called it quits for the rest of the day.

Nice, I'm pretty sure the rule of thumb with concrete is it won't rain till you start pouring concrete

I have been so busy with work and life in general things slowed down for me, I managed to get the roof on and build some stupid doors to appease the city.
