FF: great timing. your new place is coming along nicely. can i asked if you bolted your tresses you made together or are they just nailed?

i like that you used thicker material than 2 x 4's.

so you have snow in Arizona and we have sunshine here in Seattle. that's a twist.

Happy new year and hope you get the roofing shingles on before really bad weather hits your area.

Right now the ties are nailed with 6 16d nails on each side but I think I will add an angle bracket with screws on each side for added strength. The top of the ties fall just inside the lower third of the roof. The ceiling height will finish at 103" at the bottom of the ties.

did you go hang out in the new shop just to test drive it after the snow?

I did actually, lol.
I had to move all the trim boards to keep them from getting snowed on. Then had to sweep out the snow that got in the doors that aren't installed yet and start to cleanup some of the tool mess. The weatherman lied to us and it did'nt snow much last night at all but it will be cold (highs in the 20s) for the next few days so I will get the doors in next and fire up the heater inside. Even had icicles off the roof.

Well it made it to 39 degrees today so I thought I'd get the doors in. Everything went as planned and fit like the picture in the book. We're supposed to get nice weather next week so hopefully I'll get the soffits closed off and some trim work done. As you see in the last picture we are testing paint colors. What we thought was going to work, didn't do it for us so it's back to get more samples.

Picked up the rest of the materials to finish the shop today, roof shingles and paint. Tested 7 different greens and decided to go with the darkest one, Eucalyptus with bright white trim. With nothing else to buy for just the structure the grand total came in over budget at $5394.00.

Less than $5500. How much time did you spend on the build? And you experience level? You were talking about heat, will you add insulation to the walls and ceiling. Being where you are, is AC needed?

Thanks for letting us follow along.

I started the build the week after Thanksgiving and tried to do at least something every day. My experience is limited as a carpenter but this shop was pretty simple. I think things through before I start the days work to hopefully keep from screwing up too bad. I do plan on insulating and finishing later on down the road. Air is not really necessary up here except for the monsoon season, usually July and part of August. Heat is a must and my small propane heater worked real well even with no insulation and the soffits still open so it should work great once finished.

FF: with snow, ice and wind are you going to wait a bit to put on the roofing shingles? so far looking great.

was you budget $5,000? if so you did pretty darn good and amazing you can build one for that price. here in my area it might cost about that much to get the permits and design work done before you ever start.

good luck

I picked up the shingles the other day. Got a great deal from Home Depot. Shingles were a special order that someone decided not to buy so they let me have 17 bundles for 50% off the regular price of $29.00. They're lifetime shingles and the exact color we wanted to match the house and garage. I planned on waiting until the weekend to start them until the weather report changed to rain from Saturday thru Tuesday. So I decided to try to get the roof finished by close of business today. I didn't have any help and managed to get half the roof done yesterday. Worked from 9am till dark. Today I asked my bro-in-law if he could help so we'll see if he shows.
As for my budget, I just randomly picked 5k after seeing that the previous homeowner paid 10k for the garage 15 years ago. I told my wife that I could build one for half of that even at todays material costs. She said "ya we'll see", while rolling her eyes so I accepted the challenge.

Actually the weather the last few days has been fantastic. Mornings in the 20s but 50s in the afternoon. Snow is just about all gone. Had some help from my neighbor today and got the roof finished. Nobody fell off thankfully so now I can keep my feet on the ground for the trim work and the rest of the paint. Added another 10 bucks to the cost as 5 pounds of roofing nails weren't enough. My wife gets to pay the credit card bill so she knows we busted budget and is now wondering what the inside will cost, "couple hundred maybe" :dunno:

Yeah she may pay the bills but you can always stay in the new penalty box. Be an incentive to shop CL for some electric supplies.

I like to hit all the local yard sales and the Restore. Found lots of brand new things that we needed for cheap. Last yard sale I was at before starting on my shop had a used Square D breaker box with about 12 breakers in it of various amps for 5 bucks. I didn't think to buy it until later that day and it was gone when I went back. Could have saved a bunch over buying new.

FF: nice work on the roof. awesome that the friendly neighbor was willing to help too. we can't pick up all those $5 deals or we would be on that hoarder show. or have a 40 x 120 garage/shop and looking to build another one.

looking good and good to see you are somewhat weather proof now.

Got the trim done around the doors and windows. Also started on the bird boxes so I can finish the soffits this week and take some time off.

FF: everything is shaping up nicely. i do like how you finished off the ends. i hate to remind you, but hoping you remember to bolt your handmade tresses together before you get a huge wind or start hanging stuff off them.

also like that your wife helps with the work.

Nice looking finished project. Or are they ever finished? After the trim is completed, are you going to put a walkway to both doors of some type?

Keep us posted on the next portion of the work.

I did buy some 1/2" x 4 bolts to lock in the ties but still need to finish those along with other inside stuff. The roof should be okay until I start the drywall as I have the collar and rafter ties nailed to code and hurricane clips installed at the walls. I plan on leaving every other ceiling bay open for light storage but will insulate and finish all the way up to the rafters, thats why I need to use bolts. As for my wife, she's great when it comes to painting and keeping things picked up and organized. She always remembers where I left my tools when I can't find them which is just about every time I need one. She'll even be right there with the primer so a piece can be nailed up as soon as it's cut.

Plan is to make an 8x10 covered patio off the service door entrance and a drive in front of the big door, then add gravel around that with flagstone pavers as a walkway to the house and garage.

FF: it sounds like you married the right gal.:thumbup::thumbup:

i always wonder how guys get these garages built in the snow and bad weather, and you are another great example because it didn't seem to slow you down much at all.

you are heading down the home stretch so to speak and any plans for special tools or machines inside or just a nice dry warm place to work on your bikes and cars?

Had some nice weather over the past week and finished up the shop, at least the cutting and hammering anyway. We still have paint touch-up and some detail work to finish. Eventually I will start on the inside and build storage cabinets along with plenty of workbenches.

I've done the same thing on other projects because of labor cost. I'd hate to think what it would have cost me to have my shop built by a local contractor. I haven't started the inside yet but I'm guessing 1500.00

When I had my two story shop built, the framers put up the walls and the roof after. It was kind of weird to feel the building move a little when walking on the second floor. Once the exterior sheathing was on, the building didn't move a bit, and after the exterior stucco was applied, the structure was very stout. Putting soffit vents in will aid in better air circulation during the summer, as well as good attic vents.
