Time was, tool sets came in those nice hinged-lid metal boxes with a latch.

Most don't anymore. Proto still seems to.

Who makes these boxes? Is there a supplier somewhere that I can order a quantity of these from?

I've banged my head against Google and Alibaba for some time, and can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

Has anyone figured this out already, and able to link me to sources?

Proto sells their boxes separately. I bought two recently. I looked up the part numbers on the Proto website and ordered them on Amazon. I think you can do the same with Wright.

I believe what you are looking for are still made by a Japanese firm called Toyo . I have seen them on several sites, in more than one size, but I do not have any links handy at this time. I believe, though, that the Museum of Modern Art sells Toyo through their online gift shop (they ain't cheap, but the boxes look very well constructed). There was another Toyo vendor with a brick-and-morter store in Portland OR, who also had an online shop. And maybe Frank's Tools (frankstools.com) was a third source (?). Franks also sells KTC (Kyoto Tool Co.), which is another source for metal boxes that I would check into. Also, his website stocks many other unique tools and supplies from Japan -- great website if you are looking for the unique.

I found a couple boxes I was looking for through the Wright catalog. Armstrong tool also has very nice small boxes.

The plastic Snap On cases really aren't that bad either.

Also, not knowing what size you are looking for, Epsteins carries a couple of metal socket set boxes in the ~20" long size. Search for socket box. Best of luck on your search.

If they don't have to be metal, you can find some at Sears. Depends on what you're trying to carry. They also show up on Ebay now and then too.

I have a bunch of those "socket set" metal boxes. When we got socket sets at work everyone threw away the boxes and I gathered them up. Management considered them contrary to their 5S policy. I find them very handy.

Do you have an example of what you are looking for? Perhaps a picture of an older one you are trying to replicate? That would help us help you out.

This kind of box:

The two sites LB-1911 linked me to are exactly they type of box I'm looking for, but I'm hoping to find someone that stocks pre-made ones, instead of custom ordering a quantity.

As far as specific dimensions, I don't really have any at the moment - kinda looking for a variety of them.

I've got some old metal photo slide cases that kinda work, but they're really light/flimsy - the socket boxes that I've seen over the years are a lot nicer.
