Hi, I need some mezzanine storage but with my building it will be hard to go all the way across ...24'. I am thinking I could use a small area 6' x 8' and 7' high. That is about perfect for using some heavy steel shelving like available from Home Depot. The bottom would give me good 24" deep shelves and I think I could fabricate some connectors for the top that would support some decking material to store body parts (starting a Jeep YJ restoration). There would be very little unsupported between the two shelving sections... probably 4' x 6.5' section. I could anchor one long section to the outside wall and install some floor anchors and some bracing for the other section.

Has anyone already used this method. I The two shelving sections would be about $450 and that is probably way cheaper than lumber right now and a lot less work. ....
thanks, Bob

Yes, exactly. The two 2' wide shelving units would support a 8' x 4' piece of 3/4 plywood. I am not sure if I would need additional support for the 4' left unsupported. I might construct a torsion box.

You might investigate repurposed pallet racking. As I recall the uprights have predrilled flanges for floor anchors and the load beams plug into them. I have found some deals on Craig’s List.
