Small Organized Garage

When you live in Southern California you must learn how to make the most of every square foot of space that you own. I wish I had a basement, or a big pole barn but that ain’t happening so I created some personal space in my 3rd car garage. The two cars that we use on a daily basis are housed in our main garage and then my 3rd car garage is MY space for my fun car and for hobbies that I enjoy. I also find it to be a bit of a man cave for personal time just tinkering around with tools or working on a car.

I am retired and our kids are both adults and out on their own. We have decided we are staying in this house, so I have customized the space in this small garage for my interests. The garage is very humble compared with some of the elaborate spaces I see on this forum (and I am very jealous of those garages). I wish I had more room for bigger tools, but the Corvette would have to go if I added more tools.

Lighting
The lighting in the space is all LED lighting on motion sensors. I have used 5000 Kelvin color, because it looks best with my white walls and delivers the most usable Lumens for the human eye. I have two – 4’ fixtures on the ceiling that are controlled by a wall-mounted sensor that turns on when you enter the garage, and additional LED fixtures over the workbench that come on when you approach or sit at the workbench. The fixtures over my workbench provide 260 ft-candles of light on my work bench, which comes in really handy for my bad eyes.

Flooring
My flooring is Racedeck tiles – 12x12 tiles in a black and white pattern. My daughter and I installed the floor 15 years ago in 2005. The tiles have aged quite well. I recently spent some time cleaning it and then sealing it with Racedeck’s product called “Restore”. I spent about 8 hours on my hands and knees scrubbing each tile, but it was worth it. The Restore added some shine, and it is supposed to keep the floor from picking up stains and dirt. I’m happy with the floor and my neighbors stop by and comment on it frequently. A push broom keeps it quite clean most of the time. The floor looks like new again after the recent cleanup and restoration effort.

Organization
I recently built a new cabinet / shelf space for all my Dewalt tools. I love the Dewalt line of cordless tools. I used to have to hunt around for all my tools, now they are all in one easy to access spot. It was a great project to kill some time during the Covid 19 quarantine period. My cordless tools are now easy to access and I don’t have to pull the car out of the garage to retrieve them.

The workbench is designed for hobbies and it's as big as it can be – while still allowing the 65 Vette to be parked in the garage. My car fits – with just enough room for me to squeeze in front if I need to access something. If I’m working on a project I pull the car out. I repaint the top of the bench every 12 months or so with whatever white paint I happen to have in the garage. I wish I had enough room for some of the tools I used to own when we lived in Ohio, but you do the best with what you have (or the space you have).

I built some overhead shelves for all my supplies that I keep on hand for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC repairs (we own some rental homes and something always need to be fixed). The storage boxes are clear so it’s easy to see what is in each box. The shelves are over-designed but my pet peeve is shelves that sag ☹.

I enjoy constantly adding storage space for everything from nuts and bolts, to batteries, ladders, and small parts. I find it to be therapeutic to organize things. (I recognize I have some control issues with this area of my life but I suppose it could be worse!) It seems we never have enough storage room inside the house for everything, so some of it gets relegated to my garage.

Very clean and well organized! I wish my stuff were half that clean. Unfortunately, I am a mechanic and I don’t have the time to care for my tools that well. I’m a bit jealous, I will admit.

How does that floor hold up to grease and oils? Unsure if you work in the space or it’s just a nice car parking spot or not.

Nice set up anyways!

Well, which is it...Hiker Neil, or Biker Neil? lol

But seriously I am very impressed with how neat, clean and organized it is. VERY nice job.

I just moved into a new house - for us - with a huge-by-comparison-to-our-former garage. I think it's about 22x24. My old garage was a "two car" garage by 1926 standards and was only 18x18.

I plan to do black & white tiles too though I am considering VCT. Any particular reason you chose Racedeck over VCT or another brand of tile?

My new garage has six canned lights in it - don't know if LED but I suspect so. Fine for now but I am wondering how to brighten it up in there and thinking maybe LED task lights over the work bench. I love your bench and the organization around it!

With only 18 posts you're new here. Tell us more about yourself, your interests and your Vette - she's a beauty!

Dan in Pasadena - very observant on my name (hikerneil vs bikerneil). My license plate is actually HIKNBIK, so I am both a hiker and a biker. (I will change my signature to that I am consistently known as Bikerneil.)

I have been a lurker on this forum for years. At the time, I was always busy running my company and too busy working to work on my on my garage. I sold my company a few years back and can now actually begin enjoying my garage(s) like everyone else on this site. I love being retired and cannot imagine ever going back to work.

I have a mancave in my house set up with an audiophile music system - but the room I really enjoy is my garage. I enjoy time in the garage working on projects or dialing in the space that I have, or visiting with my buddies from the neighborhood. Our current project in the garage is building a new home for a giant tortoise. My son inherited my love for working on projects in the garage and he and his girlfriend are building a new house for her family's tortoise that roams their back yard. It's nearly complete.

I installed the Racedeck tiles in 2005, and I picked them because they were a super easy install and I loved the dramatic look of the white and black contrasting tiles. I have been super happy with them over the years.

I am currently spending lots of time on this forum studying flooring and general layout ideas. I plan to tackle my main garage next and I am starting with a fresh slate in that garage. I'm not sure which flooring I'm going to go with in that garage. One day I'm leaning toward VCT tiles, the next day I'm thinking polyaspartic or polyurea.

This forum is a godsend for studying and copying best practices and great ideas. Thank you to everyone for sharing their projects and best ideas.

Bikerneil,
Your space looks great. I was wondering how you stored your ladders, and looked further and saw your solution. Thinking of doing the same.

Wow very nice space. And the best Vette' ever built in my opinion. I see it is a 4 speed but is there a Big Block or Small block under the hood?

bj383ss - My 65 Corvette has its original 350 / 327, the sidepipes are awesome.

I actually replaced the original Muncie 4 speed with a new, modern Tremec 5 speed. I kept the old one in the garage, but the new 5 speed makes the car so much more driveable (IMO). It was money well spent.

Dan in Pasadena -... I am both a hiker and a biker.

Motorcycles, mountain bikes or roadies? I ask because I gave up motorcycles years ago after taking a fall at speed on a major boulevard. Fortunately no injury except some bruising and scaring the **** out of me!

I took up road biking in my 40's and then again an accident. Got hit by a car turning in front of me. Again a pretty hard scare but I'm thinking of going back to it now that we live where it is more conducive to it.

I love being retired and cannot imagine ever going back to work.

I can relate. I retired at the end of 2017, was off a few months then asked to consult and though I didn't really want to I asked for a lot and damn, they said yes! I only lasted a few months, quit and hopefully I'll never work again.

...I plan to tackle my main garage next and I am starting with a fresh slate in that garage....

How about a pic of the giant tortoises and a "Before" of the main garage?

You've done such a nice job on this garage I can't wait see what you do with a larger space. Be safe out there!

That is awesome. There are not many 327's left around and most people now a days have probably never heard their unique sound. I am sure the sidepipes add smiles to the gallon!

I wonder if I can fit sidepipes on one of my vehicles? :bounce:

I just found your thread from your avatar.
I like the way you have used your space and the white paint really brightens the place up.
I'm partial to corvettes and have a couple of them. One is the twin to yours except mine has the white interior. I love the sound of those side pipes too I bought mine in Pittsburgh Pa. and drove it back to So. Cal

Congrats on retiring and enjoying life. I'm retired for 20 years now and am much busier than when I ran my companies.

Looking forward to getting to know you a bit better!

I like how you've utilized the small space. I may have to copy your DeWalt shelf/cubbies.

Also... big fan of the Vette. Dad had a '64 with the 327 and 4 speed (but no side pipes).
