What type and size of parts?

Would they fit in the small plastic drawer organizers with the 2" wide drawers?

Do you need larger drawers for odd sized items?

Nut and bolt storage?

Storage and organization can vary wildy depending on what you're trying to pack away. A few hundred auto fuses (yes, I have them for projects) can be a simple bin organizer that can be tucked away, but keeping a stock of SAE standard and fine thread nuts and bolts needs metal or robust plastic options.

I'm using metal drawers for most of my bolt storage in the photo, with Harbor Freight pull out trays/bins for my fine thread bolts, and other fasteners. I use plastic bin trays for misc items like fuses, bulbs, furniture hardware. I buy assortment kits of O rings, E clips, cotter pins, copper brake washers, and other consumable items that I don't need immediate access to.

I have the metal pull-out drawer racks the guys above have. They are by far the best set-up I've come across. I have a rack of the ones above, 18" wide I believe, and also a rack of the 12" wide ones. I picked them up over time from garage sales and estate sales.

Durham products. Zoro has good prices. Every place I have worked for the last 50 years has had the drawer bins, the drawer boxes, and the bolt bin shelves. The rest of the product line is just OK. They do have some new aerisol storage and overhead cabinets that are interesting.

Every machine shop has Huot cabinets

Lumber yards have Durham Rotabins.

All kinds of blueprint cabinets all over Craigslist, then added Schaler bins.

I responded to an ad on Craigslist for a bunch of small parts cabinets. The seller was asking $100, IIRC. The cabinets wee filled with lots of body shop fasteners and other clips and speed nuts. This is all stuff I regularly buy and use. So, I am still looking for a good deal on empty cabinets. The seller wanted to dump the contents in his scrap.
I did buy more PLANO divided small parts containers. All is well on The Western Front.

Welcome to the forum.

What do you mean by small parts? Are we talking small car parts like filters and spark plugs, or are we talking hardware type stuff like nuts and bolts?

I went with Akro Bins (64?) plastic drawer thingies. They do work well but have the downside of visibly sagging when loaded up, to the point where the front wants to unclip from the side. I think they are more for lighter duty materials than intended to be jammed with fasteners (lol).

To address that I have a Cole Steel drawer cabinet and a couple of Equipto metal drawer cabinets waiting in the wings that I'm intending to swallow the fastener array someday soon.

I eat a lot of smoked oysters and smoked mussels.
I have been saving the cans as they will make excellent small parts drawers.
The inner lip from the pull away lid is easily peined down
The parts drawer frame will be 3 ply pinned and glued together.
Just waiting for some suitably sized offcut from the plywood merchant.
I will post a photo when it is completed.

Where did you get those metal hardware pullout trays? That’s exactly what I’m looking for.

I searched craiglist for an index file cabinet. Found this for $35. Picked up the blue bins from the dollar store

Welcome to the forum and all the great ideas available here.

Here's my parts and paint can storage, kept neatly behind cabinet doors. I added more blue bins after this photo was taken. Got them from Northern Tool along with the mounting rails. Everything is in sight so you can pick out whatever you want or just lift any bin off the rack and take it to where you are working. Each bin also comes with name tags.

I lucked into a good deal on some Lista cabinets last year and my wonderful wife bought me a whack of Schaller bins for Christmas. Once I worked up the ambition to tackle it I sorted my wood screw/nails drawer as well as my machine screws/washers drawer.

The screws and nails drawer re-org won back some space, not so much in the machine screws drawer. Either way, at least I can find what I'm after now. I did end up keeping a smaller collection of miscellaneous fasteners in each drawer for oddball stuff.

I bought used Vidmar cabinets on ebay. Four counter height cabinets went a loooong way to getting my stuff organized!

Lawson products will sell you any of a number of assortments and include the boxes.

Fastenal also has similar, but expect a longer term relationship with frequent replenishment.

I have no connection to either, beyond having interviewed with both. Had I not been diagnosed with cancer just as Fastenal made an offer, I'd be working with them!

We use an industrial supplier at work for nuts bolts and lot more (hi line supply) and I got buddy buddy with the driver/salesman and he brought me used bins when he changes out people's stuff (he generally won't put his stuff in like a fastenal bin so he trades you out) he brought me the old but perfectly good ones for free. Granted I sometimes buy $$$ in hardware lol

I think there's a zillion page long discussion here someplace on this very topic. It's a cliche' to say this, but try using the advanced search function at the top of the page and you can probably find it.
