I am trying to get together the basics to build a 16x24 pole barn to turn into a one car garage eventually with a concrete floor.

Wondering mostly on how to do the roof?

Whats the cheapest strongest method?

6x6 posts 8' on center 42" deep min.

18" hole, 42" deep, 2bags of ready mix concrete in a wheel barrel make it soupy and pour it into the hole and it'll be self leveling, set the post on that.

Trusses or rafters depending on what cheaper in your area. 1x4 purlins 24" OC across the trusses or rafters and srew your metal roofing down to the purlins. Thats what we do around here. BTW don't use PT lumber for your purlins this will cause the screws to fail. Around here we use rough sawn 1x4 which are actually a full 1" thick by 4" wide. This way you have no screws sticking through the purlins. YMMV.

i'd recommend going to a place like menards (if you have them in your area), and see what they spec out on. you can use terminals there to design your own building, and it will list the materials. if you're not going crazy tall, 4x6 posts should be fine, and where you live will help determine post depth (someone in northern minnesota needs to go deeper than someone in southern alabama due to frost).

Good idea. The terminals also have a printer that you can get the rough plans from.

After that, its just a matter of buying the material. If your real stuck, PM me and i can email you a set of larger prints i have that are very detailed. You will just have to scale it down a bit.

if you want it on the cheap a friend of mine built his with free telephone poles and rough sawn lumber. He cut all his own wood out of the poles for the rafters and girts. It turned out very nice all the stuff was cut with a pooland chain saw and a cheap store bought jig. It took him almost a year to frame a 26x76. I helped a few times and those poles are heavy and gave our trucks a work out. He spent 4000 on seconds metal, screws and trim.
